Just to give you folks some insight but one of the most popular hunting rounds in India has been an 8mm rimmed cartridge. It fires a 244 grain bullet. I believe it might be the 8mm Lebel! The rifles are made locally on old 303 enfield actions. They are crude and rough but work. Countless animals have been shot with them. It is very effective especially at close range jungle shooting ob bluebulls, sambur etc.

Can you elaborate a bit more? It was my understanding that all hunting in India is banned.

Have any pics of the guns or the rounds?

Not 8x50 Lebel. From what I know the regular british case is necked up to a bigger diameter so .303 can not be used in these rifles and the 8mm "civilian" ammo can not be used in .303 British chambered rifles. but still very few firearms can be detained there.

You are right Edmond it is definitely NOT the Lebel but was something like 8x56R from memory.

Here is a picture from the website I've linked to below.

I once had a No4 chambered in that calibre!

Anyway you can look at a current 8mm here by searching under "Products" and the "Civilian Arms and Ammunition".

Now where else could you still get 455 ammunition and No36 grenades!

The cartridge is the 8mm Austrian Mannlicher. Known in India as the .315. Enfield rifles are currently manufactured in India for sporting use in this caliber as the .303 is still a prohibited bore.
