It would work, but the accuracy wouldn't be the greatest because the groove diameter in the Argentine runs like from .311 and up.

Starmetal is correct, accuracy is very poor. I had a very nice m1909 that had been rechambered to "06. While it shot close to moa when loaded with 180 gr Sierra .311 bullets or 150 gr Hornady .312 SPs it shot cylinder bore with .308 bullets. Perfectly horrible. Was with another fellow who had loaded some 7.75 up for his m91 with 168 gr MKs. He couldn't figure out why it was key holing at 100 yards when they were match bullets. I let him try 5 of my 7.65s loaded with Speer 125 gr .311 bullets. He promptly shot a 2" group or so and was amazed that those "cheap" AK/SKS bullets shot better than match bullets. Took some convincing to get him to understand. Sounds like someone else I know Roll Eyes

A .308 bullet might work in an occasional tight bore Lee Enfield with it wide deep Enfield rifling.
The Mausers have much narrower lands that displace less metal and are less likely to work.
Some people may want to know out of curiosity but I have other things way up the list I am more curious about.
I have some of the old Speer RN .313 bullets made for the Mauser that I may try some day.
I also have some of the .312 dia Remington 215 grain RN Corelokts that I would like to try but feel they really belong to someone in moose country.

I have had excellent results (1 MOA) using .308" bullets, specifically the 200 grain Sierra PSPBT's, in my Argentine Mauser and in a .303 No.5 SMLE. You m,ay be surprised at how well a .308 will shoot in a .311" bore. Also good results in a 7.62X39mm CZ 527 with Sierra 150-ghrain flatbase spitzers. I think the bullets "swage up" to groove diameter on firing......... This group was made by three 200-grain Sierra GameKings and two 200-grain Nosler partitions with the same powder charge and o/a loaded length. MV 2690 FPS from a 29" barrel using Norma brass.

I have an 95 Dutch Mannlicher carbine. The thing was about mint in the bore when I got it. The groove diameter bore is about .268. I have been shooting .264 bullets in it and it is showing some scorching of the throat with less than 100 rounds. I think that bullets that fit are a better deal.

Graf (and Hornady) have .268 160's

Sort of a thread hijack, but with .311,.312 and.313's available , why monkey around with the.308s?
Even if they were not why not bump size the .308s to match a slug of your bore?

Good suggestion. But I believe results speak for themselves. I have seen a 7.62X39, a SMLE, and an Argentine Mauser that all shot well with .308" bullets.......

I have not try this but there are not much heavy spitzer bullets for .311-312-313" just Hornady 180 IIRC.
Also you have no premium bullet for the 7,65 or .303.

No premium bullets?
We must have a different definition?

Woodleigh, 174, 215RN
Barnes 150TSX
Hornady, 150,174
Speer 180SP
Sierra 150, 174,180

Hawk, 215 or have them make a custom for you

I built a few 7.65/ .300 Win mag wildcats and used all the above, with good results.

Thanks Sorry I didnt know Barnes makes .311 bullets.

As we can not get most of those bullets here Im not usually aware of bullets produced by some makers, only Remington, Sierra and Hornady.
Good to know heavy bullets are avaiable.

I have had great results with the 308 speer 170 gr. flat point in my Arg.
Why would this bullet shoot less than 2"?, got me!

SS

Bullets such as the 170 gr FP and the 200 gr Sierra's that El Deguello use have long bearing surfaces and also tend to not be "over stabilized" by the 10' twist so the settle down in flight (go to sleep). They many times do shoot fairly well as mentioned. However try .308 bullets with less bearing surface such as a 150 gr SPBT and accuracy is pretty bad.
