The widow of a WWII vet asked how she would go about authenticating a Lugar pistol her husband brought back from Germany. She shared a little of the history with me from his hand written diary he kept during the war. His diary states the gun was taken from a German officer he killed and the officer was referred at the "Butcher of ???" who name is referenced as Hans Franz. How can she authenticate the gun? "Only two defining forces have ever offered to die for you; Jesus Christ and the American Soldier. One died for your sins, the other for your freedom...."

If the pistol is engraved as a presentation piece to Hans Franz there would be some documentation somewhere, but if it,s just an issue pistol I doubt there is any way to authenticate it ,unless the lady also has the dead Germans ID papers and the capture papers which the US government issued for vet bring backs. It's mercy, compassion and forgiveness I lack; not rationality.
