I aquired a case of 30-06 ammo that is packed in 8 round en-bloc clips. It has a headstamp of TW53. The bullets have black tips (armor piercing?). I was told that it might be corrosive. Can anyone confirm if it's corrosive or not.

Go to this site. According to them TW53 is the first safe year to use.

TW stands for "TWIN CITIES" ARSENAL.

I'd treat TW 53 ammo as CORROSIVE! It may not be, BUT!! Various US arsenals changed to noncorrosive primers at differing times during the 1950's, but 1953 is early enough in the changeover that I would NOT chance it! Clean the bore with hot soapy water, just as if you had fired BLACK POWDER in the gun - no big deal, really.

Black bullet tips indicate M2 Ball Armor Piercing. These bullets weigh around 163-165 grains, and were regarded as MORE ACCURATE than M2 Ball 150-grain lead core bullets. During Army tests, the accuracy of rifles using the AP stuff actually improved for the first several thousand rounds, then dropped off at about the same rate as for the lead-core bullets. Conclusion:
Contrary to popular opinion, using AP bullets does NOT harm your barrel, and may, in fact, improve it!

El D is right on again....If you want the good stuff for plinking, order through the CMP. They have Lake City '06 by the case (960 bullets) for 230 bucks delivered. Regards, Rick.

John Deer tractors and Sako rifles....just doesn't get much better.

Twin Cities Arsenal (TW) switched to non-corrosive primers in .30 AP M2 ammo with lot #19776 Feb 1952. They had already switched in .30 Ball M2 ammo with lot #19362 Dec 1950. None of your ammo is corrosive primed
