Does anyone have a GOOD M1 load for target? I have several that I got out of Hornaday to try, but I know that the best loads I have found come from my friends on the board- but I always back off 10% before I try them for the first time. Not that I don't trust each and almost every one of you, but I value my guns and eyes. LOL
Thats the great thing about this board. Its like we were all sitting around, boots off and guns cleaned having a beverage of choice (mine being single malts and beer) swaping lies, tips and receipes both for reloads and game.

Judge,

Here is my load for My Garand....

Federal Match Primers,
Federal Cases,
168 gr. Hornady Match Bullets,
49.5 grs. IMR 4064 powder,
3.325 max oal.,
apply a light crimp.

I have chrony'd it at 2660 fps.

I hope this gives you a good load to work from.

The light crimp seemed to give this load the edge over previous loads I had tried.

I use Lee reloading dies, and the bullet seating die has a taper crimp/roll crimp combination. The way it reads in the instructions, is that a light crimp will only use the taper crimp (shallow) part of the seating die. But if you use a bullet with a canneluvre, it allows for a harder crimp, that allows you to use the "deeper" roll crimp part of the die.

Good luck with it... It's always a good day at the range!!!

Judge,

I’m sure you already know this, but just in case...semi-autos in general, and M1’s in particular can be really finicky about the ammo you feed them.

If you do choose to handload for economic reasons I would suggest you stick with loads, bullet shapes, pressures, and OAL’s that are as close to factory ammo as possible, and don’t alter from that without a really good reason.

Rick:
I know about simi-autos.
I just enjoy re-loading and have tons of "stuff".
My M1 which I have had for 35 yeats digests just about everything, but mostly I shoot mil-sur. I an not plesed with the accuracy of the mil -surp 30-06 avalable now. It used to be great.
I load 30-06, 300 wby mag and 30-30 so I have the components.
My M-1 is actually a collectors grade IH with matching numbers and parts made in 1954, and never rebuilt. The muzzle of bore is somewhat worn from cleaning ( from before I bought it).
This throws a little ncertianty in ti the groups, but what the hay, I am not shooting at Camp Perry. I ought to sell it and but something else, but I have had it so long its like a part of me. I guss I could get my $50.00 dollars back from it.

IMR 4895 (47.5 grns)
WWLR Primer
LC cases
150 FMJBT (IMI)

This loads works for me in Service rifle comp and John Garand shoots. Flawless function in "collectibles" and Heavy Barnett setup.

I use a Forester head space case gauge with RCBS "X" standard dies to adjust my sizing and crimp with a Lee factory crimp die.

You ought to get a MW gauge to see how worn the muzzle is, sounds as if the muzzle is worn you may not get any better groups/accuracy with the suggested alternate loads people suggest, sort of like working in the dark.

I had it gauged. It was worn out. The guage droped through. I know that I won't get the accuracy I need to do much, but its fun. I am thinking of re-barreling and keeping the IH barrel in case I sell. thanks.

Thanks I will try that when it get cooler than 90-100 around here. If I wanted to soot in this kind of heat, I would go to Iraq and let them send some yongster home. actually I would go in New York Min. Ig tey let old farts go so someone like Rick's son could come home. I am old enough that a few more years one way of the other don't matter as much as for these kids. I have long felt that it was unfair the the kids had all the fun and that they should keep the kids home and send us old timers off.

I'm with you on this one, Judge. I would love to get paid for shooting target practice. But I don't think you would want to push and pull my crippled up behind around while we clear a house. Cool
