I picked one of these up several years back. It was misidentified by the gun shop selling it. I don't even remember what they thought it was. It has been sitting in the safe since purchase.

Do any of you shoot yours?

Own a Type I that had been rechambered to 257R, so its basically a 6.5x57. My two type 38 Arisakas are also rechambered to 257R.

While I have no problem shooting my Type 38s with my reloads, can't say the same for the type I. Have an extraction problem with it, so its seldom been shot.

I have one with perfect like new metal work that some bubba chopped the stock on.
I shoot the original 6.5 Jap round.
It shoots about 2.5" to 3" groups with Norma factory rounds. Reloaded ammo is a little better, but I am not too good with open sights these days.

The Japanese round is much smaller than the rifle chamber diameter like it's contemporary, the .303 British. This causes the brass to bulge on one side near the base.
My plan for the future is to take the larger base .303 brass and machine it (reduce the rim and cut an extractor groove) to fit the bolt face. Then I will form the cases to fit the 6.5 chamber. This should produce brass that fits the chamber and produces better accuracy.
I also have to open up a 6.5 Jap sizer at the base to match my chamber.
