Three Marine divisions fought for Iwo: the 4th and 5th made the initial landing and the 3rd, which was in reserve, was committed on D+1, due to the fierce Japanese resistance and the mounting Marine casualties.

My Dad was there on one of the tin cans (USS Evans DD552) providing fire support for the Marines. In a period of 18 hours they expended over 1900 rounds of 5-inch shells, a lot of it in support of the 4th Division holding the airfield that was counter attacked by the Japs.

Yeah, I've gotten the "bandwidth limit exceeded" message every time I've tried it. Too bad, I wish I could've checked it out.

That was one hell of a job those Marines did.
