By the passing of one nonagenerian?

I think not.

Such is life. We are born. We live our alloted years. We die.

What we are diminished by are our lowered expectations. We can think of no one who has the quality to replace Richard Winters.

Thus we are diminished. By what his passing reveals about us.

I certainly hope that no one takes any of this as stated or implied criticism of Major Winters. That is most definitely not my intention. He earned every accolade awarded to him, and undoubtedly many that weren't.

Major Winters helped other men survive in a terrible time and we got to hear their story.

Yessir!

And by that we are enriched. Not diminished.

Suitably fortified by the tales they have to tell, we can carry on.

My only regret is that he lived about 45 mins from me, and I never got to thank him in person.
