Amazing K 31 !
Having clamp-mounted a 6x42 scope on my K31, I went to the range this afternoon and was in for a nice surprise. Here are the 2 x 5-shot groups I fired at 100 meters with my handloads (168 SMK / N 140) :

L : 5 in 3,4 cm (1.17 MOA), 4 in 1.1 cm (.38 MOA), shot 2 pulled and called ;
R : 5 in 3,2 cm (1.1 MOA), 4 in 1,9 cm (.65 MOA), shot 4 pulled and called.
Amazing for a 55 year old military rifle. I must have drawn a great barrel. I'll tend to that trigger one of these days though, for as good as it may be for a military rifle, it's not really target grade.

3 shots do not make a group, they show a point of aim or impact.
5 shots are a group.

The groups are nice, but it is really a sneaky way to sell scope mounts!!! (Big friendly grin, just pullin' yer leg...)

Seriously, what make is that bolt cover/scope base, and where can a guy get one?

AC, Probably available from Brownells or Grafs as the St. Marie clamp-on mount(~$100). It may be a less common EAW mount for about triple the money. Some cheaper knock-offs of unknown quality have been showing up too. Best-o-Luck

Can you use the military strippers with those mounts?

@Andre

In August 2004 the annual SwissRifle.com Postal Shooting has been taken in place. All the people form over the whole world are participating this kind of shooting. After receiving the targets the shooter has to compete the program which will contain 6 shots slowfire and 6 shots rapidfire within 60 secondes. Quite hard to finish in time...
Target

The target shows 12 hits with 117 of possible 120 score points at 109 yards!

My (detachable) mount is actually a steel EAW of which St.-Pierre made an alu copy at 1/3 of the price and which seems OK too (having very satisfactory experience with the EAW swingout mounts, I tend to favour the brand, cost notwithstanding). This morning, I broke the MOA barrier :

( 5 in 2,1 cm /.72 MOA - 4 in 1,02 cm / .35 MOA).
I'm getting verrry impressed by this veteran and am already planning a second buy. Must have catched that "Swiss flu" they're talking about on SwissRifles.com Eeker

Without a doubt the K31s are the best deal in mil-surplus!

Andre, very impressive groups!

I do not reload for the 7.5x55mm because the GP11 ammunition is so accurate.

Have you compared accuracy between your 168gr. Sierra MK handloads and the GP11 ammunition? I would like to know if you find your 168 gr. Sierra handsloads much more accurate than the GP11.

Thanks!

PS - Could you share the loading data for your N140/168gr. Sierra MK handload?

Thanks Andre, and everyone else who provided info on those clamp-on scope mounts! Gotta get me one of those.

My K-31 will shoot ca. MOA with cast bullets at 100 yards with iron sights but I have never bothered to work up the best jacketed bullet rounds for it as I think I'd need a good scope set-up to feel secure in the results of that testing.

I already have a "scout scope" mount, but find I just can't teach myself to like that system of looking though an optical sight.

Thanks again,

AC

Daman,
My scope overhangs the stripper slots, so these cannot be used with scope in place. BTW, if you want to go back to iron sights and strippers, there's only 1 screw to loosen and un-scope. I've tried GP11 & Prvi factory against my handloads and the latter are way ahead. I'm using Prvi cases, N 140 / 44.0 behind 168 SMK and WW lr primers (I tested 168, 175 & 180 SMK but my rifle prefers the 168's).

Your stock looks in very good shape and devoid of the usual dents and nicks. It's also dark for beech, is this a walnut one ?
