I ran across a large ring M98 with a long barrel, probably 29".

It is definately not a "Persian" as I have a "Persian" take-off barrel in hand. (thank you fourtails).

The only markings are on the receiver ring.

There is no doubt about the origine of this rifle, but what is it?

It has a good bore and is in worn albeit very good condition other than the stock.

I was considering buying a "Persian" barreled action for $179.95 from FAC ar SAMCO to do a re-chamber job on, but I can get this one for much less.

Is this a large ring/large thread action?

I thought the only long barreled M98s where the "Persion" (large ring large thread) and the "Turkish". (large ring/small thread) The latter would not be acceptable for my purposes.

Sounds like you have a M1922 Czech. It is very similar (if not the same) as the Persians. Mine has an odd rear sling swivel, it's about 1 1/4" long from attachment point to actual sling connection. Shoots pretty well, though I haven't yet had time to feed it any high quality ammo.

I think Exercion is correct, you've found a Czech 98-22. They were essentially the precursor to the venerable VZ-24. Same action, large ring large thread, They were selling at Century last year for around $80. They and the Vz-24 are all but dried up now.

Before the mid twenties, the mauser rifles were all considerably longer.

Best regards,

What are you going to build with it WJ? My latest idea for a rifle project is to use a 29" bbl and rechamber to 8mm/338 or 8/06 and turn it into a something resembling a tactical rifle.

Can you imagine the velocity a 8mm/338 would make with a good 29"er?

I want to do another 8mm-06 Ackley Improved.

I fudged up the J P Saur "43" action that I had originaly had done. I got carried away with the feed rails. homer.

I think I can salvage it for an 8X68S. I have a "cherry" 29" "persian" barrel for that project. I would cut it to 26" for the 8X68S.

I want to cut the barrel @ the last step for the 8mm-06 A.I., that will give me just shy of 24" and a little more "meat" when I turn it down.

Where do you get your 8X68s brass from?

Ive got a very clean bbl off of a 98 that I have considered making one of those when I find a suitable action for it. But due to lack of that brass and dies on this side of the pond I really hesitate to do it.

Old Western Scrounger has both Hirtenberger and the horribly expensive RWS brass. eek2

I purchased 20 of the Hirtenberger cases and they seem fine to me and they are 1/4 the price of the RWS. Dimensions and weight are very consistent. I believe they were about $.45 apiece.

Many on this forum rate the RWS as worth it. I will probably buy 20 RWS and test to failure (loose primer pockets, split necks, etc.) compared to the Hirtenberger. If they don't last @ least 4 times as long, what's the point? bewildered

Due to family problems, all of my Mauser adventures, except for picking up a few parts here and there, have been put on hold for a while. boohoo

Westrnhtr;

I forgot to mention that the dies are realy not that hard to come by.

If you go to Sinclair's or other more "rifle loonie" sofa oriented suppliers you will find 8X68S dies listed. thumb

I got a set of Redding 8X68S dies from Lock Stock & Barrel.

For your 8x68 brass, try Natchez shooters supply. http://www.natchezss.com/ They are on the web and have recently begun importing RWS brass at something that approaches reasonable prices. I have stocked up on my peculiar calibers from them (6.5x57, 8x60, 5.6x57) They say they have 8x68 in stock, at $24.70 per 20
