Awfully impressive. For anyone to survive so many island invasions is just sheer damn luck.

I once worked for a CEO (effectively, owner of his company) who claimed to have participated in several of those. BS. His friends told me he served as a cook on one of the ships.

I've had other acquaintances who landed on Tarawa, Okinawa and Hiroshima (not fun) and who were attacked by kamikazi planes on their ships.

Nowadays, I interact with members of the Japan Self Defense Force, as do members of the US Navy and diplomatic corps. What a strange world. Our enemies are not the same anymore, sixty years later. Merry Christmas.

Yes the world changes and eventually sanity prevails but sometimes it is way too painful and costly to get there.

My uncle, Bill Hendricks, just a kid private, took a sniper's bullet through the upper spine on Okinawa. His life after that was pain and misery. The very least we can do is learn about and acknowledge the sacrifices made by these men.
