From those of you who have purchased guns recently from this program, how accurate is their description of the Garands being shipped? Kudude

Hmmm.. their "description" only goes as far as grading them mostly by throat and muzzle wear. Unless you're talking the collector and correct grades. I purchased a service grade and a field grade from them this year. I am very happy with what I got. The same guns would have run $2-400 more in a store local.

The first one, a Service grade, Greek return, cleaned up.

The second one, a USGI field grade, just out of the box as shipped.

I purchased a service grade Springfield. I am very happy. The action was 90/95%, with a new barrel. It cleaned up swell. There is some pitting on the receiver where it meets the wood, but I've seen much worse, and it's been "re-parked" since.

I started to refinish the stock and saw a great big crack running from the magazine well area halfway to the fore end. I cried to the CMP and they exchanged the stock. Four hours of ironing out dents, some sanding with Scotch Brite, and some Tung oil later, I have a rifle that will fetch more than $1000 at a dealer or gun show. (Not for sale though.)

I'm happy.

Regards,

Eric

I now have 4. All were service grades, an SA, SA dane with VAR barrel, an IHC and a Winchester.

Out of the box the only one I was disappointed with was the Winchester. The stock was black! It had paper stuck to the finish and was just plain ugly. I thought about complaining but then started to clean it. As the layers of dirt came off with a wipe away decreaser/cleaner a beautiful old rifle appeared. I reoiled the stock and wouldn't consider parting with it. I've been lucky I've seen some ugly rifles come from them but they are all a piece of history and they are mechanically sound.

I'm saving my money for my next CMP purchase. These rifles won't be available forever and when they are gone the gun show prices will be double or more. Buy one now before it's too late.

And, after you get it, come over to www.rwva.org, and join us in the Appleseed Program, shooting it! You'd sure be welcome!

Send a letter in with your order form asking for whats most important to you. I always ask for good barrels because I shoot matches. If wood or metal finish is more important, just ask.
They are a great bunch down there and will help out if they can. I nerver received a stinker even the Birch stocks on my Danish guns looked good after I squeezed the grease out of them.

Hello the campfire:
My M1 is not a CMP. I bought it in 1969 in great shape except the stock. It is a IH that has never bee rebuilt. I suspect it came from some military school as the bore looks almost un-fired, EXCEPT the muzzle is out of spec from sloppy cleaning. I have been advised to put it up and buy another shooter. As it is a collector grade except for the replacement stock. (all I can say is youthful ignorance) Also to try to find a stock with the proper markings. I like to shoot it but it is not accurate enough for high power matches.
Do I:
Shoot it any way?
Rebarrel but keep the take off?
Rebarrel in .308? keep the take off?
Sell and get a better shooter?
Send It to one of my friends on the forum for inspection with the hope that It will find its way home someday?
Play around with it but keep it in good shape and give it to my grandson in a few years.
Make a lamp out of it?

Is it safe to let for a 58 year old man run around in the woods unsupervised with a high powered rifle?

Take it to a competant gunsmith and get it counterbored, this will get rid of the worn crown and accuracy should improve.
