This is a photo of my 2005 buck. On the third or fouth day of the season I had a chance to hunt down the road from my house. I had perhaps only 1.5 hrs daylight. It was my first break to myself since the deer season had started. I left my studio taxidermy @ 1600 after telling my son where I was going and drove down the road, stopped at a 5-6yr old clear cut next to a river and walked the south side said clear cut. It took perhaps 15 mins. No sign of deer. I walked across the far end of the cutting and stopped, looking north, in front of a small grassy area. The grass was perhaps 3-4ft tall and I thought now this is where a deer would bed down and as soon as I tunk it, a white flag jumped out of the grass and started running accoss the clearcut in the direction I had come in. I raised the mauser and watched, thru my scope, this med. buck jump windfall and his high tail antics as he headed for heavy cover. I fired twice, but he kept on going until he stopped at the cutting's edge, perhaps 100yds from me. Broadside it looked back against the spruce treeline! I put the X on his shoulder and let the 30-06 round loose. (A 150 grain Hornady spirepoint 3031 bullet with 32 grs Reloader 7.) And that was it, my 2005 season a 20 min. deer hunt was over. 20 minutes on opening day. Big deal, I kill mine a DAY BEFORE the season. Hey just kidding. You got to hate those one upper kind of guys. Congrats on the deer and good shoot'n. I remember years ago when I tagged out on a buck within minutes of opening day. I was happy about the buck but it sucked that my season was over as soon as it started. Where did you get the caribou that is in the background? Nova Scotia? I appologize, I don't know what kind of game you have in Nova Scotia. Daryl

The bou is from the rock, or Newfoundland. It is a young one. Although caribou were native to Nova Scotia, they became extinct in early 20th century. Loss of caribou moss on the barrens, due to fires and the introduction of the whitetail deer, which carries a deadly parascite to bous and moose is believed to have done them in. The native mainland moose in Nova Scotia, numbering in the low hundreds is on the endangered species list here. However on Cape Breton Island where the mainland was crossed with Alberta moose a many, many yrs ago, these are doing very well in the highland there. A hunting draw is done every yr for 200 or so moose and the native can harvest some besides this. These moose are an east coast secret so to speak, as they are much bigger than the eastern canadian moose and the antlers are much larger than the eastern moose, most likely due to the Alberta line in them. Cool! Seems too simple sometimes. I've never been blessed with an openning shot so soon. But had friends with first day kills. ( i'm going for mixed game, moose, elk, deer, etc.)

Exit31' Thanks for the info, that is interesting. We have muledeer and whitetail that have moved into the Yukon, as a matter of fact, there will be muledeer tags available this fall for the first time. I hope they don't create any problems for our caribou. We have introduced elk here some years ago. There is talk that they will be available to hunt as well. At one time the Yukon was coyote free. They moved in after the ALCAN HWY. Unfortunetly, this place is crawling with them. Daryl
