We took eight hours to drive the 180 miles to our hunt location in the Yukon. Just took our time.
First day out the weather was very warm at 70 degrees. I did manage to see one bull with a couple of cows late in the evening and too far up a mountain to do anything more than watch them. I saw one bull just at dark, as he was cresting a hill 800 yards away. We had talked to one fellow 60 miles down from us who said the rut had not started. This being the 16th of September I thought I was sure at least the rut would have started. Next morning the weather was terrible. Fresh snow in the mountains, high wind, rain and hail. I went out and called a few times and did see two bulls but very far off. I was certain in the wind they could not hear me. Being fairly wet \i headed back to camp to wait out the ugly weather. About five PM the weather smartened up so we all went two miles out to the area I had seen on of the bulls earlier in the day. Three cow calls in succession and we heard the first bull grunt up the mountain in the trees. A couple minutes later he showed himself at 250 yards. He stopped for a few seconds so I let out one bull grunt and he started to come like a freight train. Our son's girlfriend was ready to run. The bull slowed and stopped 50 yards away took the shot with my 7MM mag Huskavarna. It was all over. Of course in moose hunting then the work started. It was 630 PM so dark at 8 PM. At 830 we called it a day. We had a front and hind leg in our tub trailer, separated the rest of the moose from the gut pile by a couple hundred yards and back to camp. At first light we were back and all was ok. We were back in camp with the moose in four hours. Loaded our trailer with quads, tub trailer and moose and headed home. We stayed out that night and went the rest of the way the next day.

Not the larges tmoose but will do us just fine this winter.

Just watching 'The Call of the Wild', starring Rutger Hauer and set in the Yukon! What a coincidence! Great report btw!

Nice bull. They are coming in good here as well (MB). We got a nice bull last night about 500 yards behind our house. Wife called him in and hammered him with her .338 and 210 Partition.

Hauled him back in with the tractor and hung him overnight from the loader. Will get him quartered and into the cooler this afternoon.

At least we will not starve this winter. Smiler
