I agree with AnotherAZWriter: I have killed maybe 15 caribou and I have killed them with .338s, .378 Wby, and .300 Wby. I normally use NP. I have been around when about another 50 or so were killed. And most reasonable rifles with good bullets work well: 7mm Rem mag, .30-06, and various other .30 calibers. I carry a heavier rifle (my .378 is what I carry most often) because I am always looking to shoot a brown or grizzly bear. But if I am hunting caribou in the late winter/early spring (my favorite time to hunt caribou is Feb/March) I will carry my .300 Wby shooting 180 NP. This is an excellent caribou setup. Caribou can often be a long way out on the open tundra so a flat shooting hard hitting rifle/bullet outfit is very usefull when you need to make a long shot, even if caribou are relatively easy to kill.

But don't be fooled: caribou are big animals and I personally think big animals deserve bigger (rounder) bullets.

Back from the hunting.

We drove into the eastern highlands on Wednesday. After some driving along the trail, the guide spotted a herd quite close by but due to complete lack of coverage he wanted to drive a bit closer, flanking the herd and into a small depression close by where the vehicles might be hidden.

Creeping towards the depression, we were cought completely off guard by another herd grazing there just by the trail. A beautiful herd of cows numbering around 100 animals. Needless to say, they panicked and fled before the hunting buddy could take the shot.

The depression almost became a mental state since we were sure that the original herd, spotted perhaps a kilometer or two away, would be gone by now.

But no, there they were and still grazing. But this was to be a difficult task. The surrounding land was completely flat, giving no coverage aside from a small stream and its small cut into the ground. We had to crawl along the stream trying not to expose ourselves, using the banks for cover.

The banks were nowhere higher than 1m (3ft) so knees and elbows became sore after a gruesome 1Km crawling.

Then suddenly the banks opened up where the stream was flowing into a small pond and there they were in a range of about 250m.

By then, a cow had spotted us and kept us under close observation for 20 to 30 minutes, unsure of the nature of those green crawling things with pipes of metal. If only I ever got that much attention from females of my own species... ...well I actually do ever since I got married.

She finally decided that we were no threat and turned away to graze. That enabled me to crawl on my belly a bit closer to pick out my bull. There were no really large bulls there but still some with beautiful crowns.

As a sign from the almighty, one of them stood up exposing a full broadside and I took the shot. It was a lungshot with a complete penetration. He dropped after a second or two. My Tikka 7mmRM and Nosler BT worked perfectly with no excessive devastation.

This caused the rest of the herd to panic, and the buddy and the guide had to follow the herd to get his cow. They got her and her calf some minutes later. What a great hunt !

Regards
