Hello fellow AR hunters and shooters,

I wanted to share my rifle with you all. It is nothing fancy but it is my gun and I would not trade it for nothing else as I've killed 2 moose with it already. I will also post a few pictures of the territory we hunt year after year in the province of Québec.

Best Regards,

Enigma

Good for you Enigma. Tell us more about your rifle, load and bullet performance.

Interesting that you use it without a scope.

The rifle is a Winchester M70 classic stainless in 375 H&H. The ammo used on this years hunt was Federal 300gr Nosler partitions since I didn't have the time to work up an accurate load.

The performance on paper was great!!! The hunting was a different story. A local company logged our territory 1 week before opening day!!! All the moose were spooked and migrated 4 kms in thick timber. Our group ended by shooting a young calf on the last day of the hunt but I was already gone due to work. Better luck next year I guess. I still had a blast since hunting is all about getting together with your friends and meeting new ones... isn't it?

P.S. I don't use a scope since most shots are within a 100 yrds with most shots around 50 to 75.

Good choice and a nice rifle, may I suggest a load for you? It is:

Win. brass

Nosler 300 PT.

H-4350-71-77 grs. Go up in one grain increments, I like 75 or 76 depending on which of my rifles I am using.

Mag. primer.

This is a temperature resistant and very accurate load which works better than anything I have tried in six .375s over about 25 yrs. It should do well in "La Belle Province".

Thanks guys,

I also like H4350 and use it all the time. My gun likes 80gr of H4350 behind a 300gr Sierra bullet. Last time I chronographed the load I was getting close to 2600fps and pretty good groups.

I wanted to add that this load will only fit in Winch Brass with a 6 inch drop tube and a good deal of compression...

I just got a Remmington ABG 700 in 375. I am trying to work up a load for it with 300 grain Barnes X and Solids. It shoots great so far and I will be using it in Tanzania in 2007 and up here on Moose and bear.

Hello Honkey,

I love this caliber and for a matter of fact it is the one I use the most... even for plinking with light 225gr Hornady's. It does wonders on Moose or even Bear. Goog luck with your reloads.

Nice photos. What zone do you hunt in?

You're the first Quebecer that I've seen that uses a .375 on Moose. Why not?!

Best of success next year.

Hi CanadianLefy,

The hunting territory is 50kms to the west of Gaspé. It is indeed a very beautiful area with plenty of moose... some big, some small.

As far as being the only guy in Québec to use a 375 on moose, well I'm sure there is the odd guy that does but most hunters out there use a 270 a 308 or a 30/06. The reason is simple, because these calibers work great and I won't say that the 375 is better because if hit properly with either, all these calibers do the job really well.

Cheers,

Enigma

lots of people put down the Win 70 like you have saying the stock is really bad. Do you have any issues with it? How much does it weigh? how is the recoil? I have one in my future plans, hopefully.

Alot of the new Win 70's in the store that I have handled (cant find a 375 though) have had very rough actions. How was yours?

Thanks

Hello hibkerbum,

I think that guns are like cars... some folks like GM, some like Fords, others like BMW or Porsche. I like my Win 70 very much. I'm learning to shoot it more and more each time I take it out. The stock is a plastic injection molded stock, not a fiberglass version but for now it does the job. The only thing I modified on the rifle was the shitty recoil pad and replaced it by the new Pachmayr XLT Triple Magnum pad. Shooting the gun now is very enjoyable without any pain. With the old pad I had a hard time shooting more then 15 rounds off the bench. I bet you I could shoot it all day long now!!! well almost Big Grin

As for the actual weight... can't tell you as I didn't weight it on a scale. As I said, recoil was what it was, as long as it doesn't hurt! The action was fine to me. Never had a feeding problem, never had an ejection problem. I'm very happy with my gun overall. The only thing I might change is the spring in the magazine box as I find it a little weak for my taste.

Hope this helps.

Hi Enigma,

That's nice rifle and the calibre is great.

But, you know what caught my attention in that picture?

In two of the photoes, I observe that the bolt is pulled back.Shows you are a very responsible gun owner.
Now gentlemen, I am not saying anything that those who don't are any less responsible.

Best-
Locksley,R.

Hello Robin,

Thanks for your remarks about the rifle. When my parents taught me safe gun handling practices they always told me that it is always an unloaded gun that kills or injures people. They also taught me to always have the bolt of my guns open. That way you can tell if you have a round in the chamber or not and other people around you will feel more comfortable!!!
