That is one of the best publicity stunts ever, IMHO. Publicity stunt or not, I select WestJet whenever possible. They actually understand customer service. | |||

Why west jet because it's great. Why not air Canada well because it is usually more expensive even though it has to be bailed out by the Feds all the time because they all have shares in it and the geriatric grumpy crew west jet is just a better air line.... | |||

I fly West Jet when I can, but having said that, they did charge me for my rifle case the last time I flew with them out of Yellowknife, heading south. When I was heading north to Yellowknife the West Jet employee did not charge for the rifle case. When I asked about the fee in Yellowknife I did not get anything more than attitude from the girl checking my baggage in…….. essentially too bad if you don't like it. I suspect you were charged for additional baggage not because it was a rifle? Air Canada tacks a special rifle fee on even if it's not additional baggage. | |||

Air Canada is far and away the worst airline I've flown on. Not a ton of options when going to a lot of places though…had a giant hassle with the person handling my rifle and other luggage this past february (perhaps the reason a bag was unloaded in Istanbul and not Bishkek?). I haven't flown west jet for sometime with a gun, but the last time I did it was free…always a pleasant experience. Well on the way up the employee said the gun case was sporting equipment and so she would not charge for it…..and I only had two bags including the gun case. Same goes coming back. Two bags including the gun case. I fly that way a couple times a year usually and that was the first time I was charged for the gun case. It was not a specific rifle charge to be sure but there is no doubt whatsoever she knew what was in it. You got lucky on the way up. It should be an extra bag fee since the allotment is only 1 bag free, second bag $20. When I went to RSA the check in lady was so mad that we were going "shooting" that she forgot to charge me the $100 firearm fee because she was so buy ensuring that my mother and I (yes, I took my mom on safari - that way I don't have to take photos) were seated on opposite sides of the plane. Joke was on her, I told the guy next to me that he was moving. He didn't seem inclined to argue the point. He sat next to the 350 pounder all the way to Frankfurt. Well even more interesting is I got told my gun case was oversize and if I remember correctly, she tagged me for $75. When I flew west this last spring with West Jet I did not pay for my second piece of luggage, a gun case, in ether direction. Oh well, times are changing and soon all airlines will charge you for anything more than one piece of checked luggage. I think a good many do already. Back when Air Canada first proposed this charge for guns, I was one of 6 people who objected to it as unnecessary. Unfortunately, Too many gun enthusiasts took your attitude and did not complain, so Air Canada got their fee. AC reasoning was it was extra labor cost to handle guns. In reality all they do is hand you a piece of paper to fill out that its unloaded and they don't even handle the gun case. Its handled no different than Skis or sporting equipment. FWIW one of the six was SCI. If you have that much to fight for, then you should be fighting. On my latest trip to Azerbaijan, our guns were two days late showing up due to mishandling by Air Canada. I refused to pay the additional charge on the way home and after lots of arguing, they acquiesced. If they are going to charge extra for special handling there is an expectation of special handling that comes with it and I didn't receive it so why should I have to pay for it. | |||

That is a really interesting statement as I know I complained to Air Canada and told them that I would instruct my clients not to use their services. I also know the outfitters association I belonged to complained as well in writing. My 'attitude' is to expect the worst when travelling and then you do not get surprised.
