I am considering putting a deposit down on a Grizzly Bear hunt in Southeastern BC.
The outfitter warns me that they may not have tags for them in 2 years becuase the govt may move them to the endagered species list.
Can anyone educate me on this and please let me know the real chances of this happening.
Thanks,
W.Smiler
PS> I trust the outfitter completly, just would like to learn more about this.
ThanksSmiler

The prediction way back in the mid 1980's was grizzley hunting would be done by 2000 in BC.It's still going on and as a montana resident just across the border we got lots of grizzlies that go back and forth.Maybe our AR bc hunters can enlighten you more to the future and the politics of grizzly hunting in BC.On a personal note I'm batting 50% on those hunts, longer hunt days is better (14)and sheep shape is the way to go.

They shut down the grizzly hunting in Alberta some years back and we don't have a shortage of the big furry varmints down here in South Western Alberta ... Big political stuff .. If you need a grizzly bear to keep you happy .. (who doesn't?) I wouldn't put it off for a bunch of years ... (I doubt if they are remotely close to being endangered in B.C. Lots of remote country up there ... ) Hard to trust governments ... Frowner

Hmm
Here's my take on it.
Its a political battle tween the anti hunters/granola crowd and the Govt./hunters.
The anti's have been trying to use Bears as the thin edge of the wedge here.
First it was Black Bears are in trouble cuz they are getting poached for Chinese medicine. They should not be trophy hunted. So the Govt nuckled and we now have a stipulation that all edible portions have to be removed.
As far as Black Bears go the area where I live is infested with them. They are at all time highs here.

Then they went after the Grizzly hunting stating that the Griz were in trouble and on the fast track to endangered status.
This is of course outright BS but the Granola crowd (highrise environmentalists) eat it right up.
If anything the griz pops. overall are prolly higher than anytime recent (50yrs).
Of course its always possible that some areas just don't hold a lot of G bears no matter what but overall there are lots.
In the past 35 yrs I have seen a slow but steady increase of personal sightings while hunting and anecdotal evidence from fellow hunters.
Most of the fellas I am in contact with on a similar site draw tags and fill them without too much trouble barring weather issues.
Will the Govt cut off the Griz hunt? I don't think so but you never can predict what the hell they will do if they think the political mileage is good enuf.

Woodsie,

If you want the most recent information on grizzly bear hunting is SE British Columbia contact www.packhorsecreek.com
He will give you the most recent allocation numbers, present political scene and an honest assessment on the future of grizzly bear hunting in BC. If you want to hunt grizzlies in BC I wouldn't put it off for much longer. Good Luck.

3m is the best part of 10 ft. You'd have to look for a coastal bear - as opposed to an inland or mountain grizzly - to have a chance of a bear approaching that size.

ha ! lots of grizz in b.c. only bad thing is they have far more anti's.

i live in n.e. wash. and make an occasional foray into b.c. to fish, sightsee or drive to alaska to hunt and fish.

for fun i call in bears. in s.e b.c. i once started calling and had 3 grizz. take turns standing up in a field and look in my direction, caught a fourth sitting up looking at me over vegetation on my other side. and yes all grizz, no blacks. and further more ...pig backed out and retired to move camp for cooking dinner. Wink Big Grin i just decided i didn't have enough grub for visitors that didn't r.s.v.p. Roll Eyes
