I wonder, now that the historically monumental election is over and Mr. Obama has decisively won, will we Canadians see even further restrictions on shipments of firearms and related products to our nation? I am inclined to think that he and his VP designate, Joe Biden WILL do whatever they can to cut off US exports of sporting guns to Canada, as well as everywhere else. What say you, is it time to "stock up" and maybe encourage your gunstores to buy European guns, conponents and optics?

Tough call. They may not crack down on exports as much as they do on domestic firearms, after all, it's still a business which can be taxed. Not too worried about it, manufacturers will find legitimate ways to get their products to where there is demand for them. If we're stuck with Euro-only options, it's not a bad thing, it just cuts down on selection and removes a lot of competition, which could mean <sigh> price increases. Ultimately though, Canada is a drop in the bucket to US manufacturers as far as firearms sales go so who knows what might happen. ________ "...And on the 8th day, God created beer so those crazy Canadians wouldn't take over the world..."

I anticipate with the control of Congress and the Senate coupled with the White House that we will see a significant tax increase on ammunition and reloading components within a year or two. Firearms will likely experience a similar tax increase. Of course, this will be passed on to consumers in Canada who happen to purchase this items from the USA.

I can't see to much happening right away, he has bigger fish to fry than gun exports, besides as MikeyB says they can tax exports. Obama's platform was to stop importing not stop selling finished products. But just to be safe start buying up components now for later, save a little anyway. I would think that the gun industry is one of the few in the USA that is doing well, its not very likely till they get the rest of their economy turned around that they will be looking to interfere with segments of industry that are currently successful.

I appears that the US Gov't managed to screw us before Bush II leaves office. From questar's website: "On September 25th 2008 US State Department posted on their website a new fee structure for Exporters dealing in ITAR products. State Department has increased the fees that they charge us (annually to process export permits) by well almost 1,800% (from what was $1,750.00 per year to approximately $30,000) and they did it retroactively. Basically they added an additional $250.00 US, (that's about $325.00 Canadian) to the cost of every export permit we apply for. That combined with the recent slide in the Canadian dollar exchange rate has left us two choices: Either stop offering the 3rd Party Export Service entirely... or... drastically increase the fees we charge our customers to cover these new costs. For the time being we have chosen to increase the fee and see if the service is sustainable. We may find that even with this increase it still doesn't allow us to justify the service so please be aware that your importation must be processed and completed within 4 months of your initial request. If your firearm is not going to be at our US office within 120 days of your starting the process with us, then please make us aware of this before hand... we will not be responsible for firearms that do not arrive at our US office within the timeframe specified. We thank you for your understanding and co-operation." Questar is now wanting $750 to do an import to Canada. If you have that much to fight for, then you should be fighting. The sentiment that modern day ordinary Canadians do not need firearms for protection is pleasant but unrealistic. To discourage responsible deserving Canadians from possessing firearms for lawful self-defence and other legitimate purposes is to risk sacrificing them at the altar of political correctness." - Alberta Provincial Court Judge Demetrick
