I just got back from a black bear hunt in B.C. Canada. Four of us hunted near Tatla Lake in Central B.C. where three of us got bears and the fourth missed his shot. Beautiful area and a great outfitter(Niut Trails Outfitter, Eric Hatch)

Isn't Tatla lake where the woman got mauled just a few days ago? All skill is in vain when a demon pisses on your gunpowder.

No, Tatla Lake is in the Chilcoten, my late brother worked there for the BCFS some thirty plus years ago. The girl got jumped north of Fort Nelly, several hundred miles away; there are gazillions of bears here, actually too many.

Great to hear! I know Eric Hatch and his son, Eli, and they are great guys. I'd reccomend them! 375 Ruger- The NEW KING of the .375's!!

Well, I was using a 340 Weatherby which I know is overkill but this was the gun I took with me. The other two guys used 300 Win magnum in Mod 70's. We actually saw more grizzley than blacks and the other two hunters were charged by a sow grizz and cub. Eli fired twice over the grizzleys head and once in the ground and the grizz finally stopped the charge at fifty feet! I was using a Nosler partition and it dropped the black instantly with a lung shot.

Congratulations yankees...It doesn't sound like your .340 was overkill to me..I'ld use a .340 or a .338 with 210gr NP any day on black bear. You want those bears to fall down right now... Good work! Robert Jobson

Eli was using a bolt 30-06 with iron sights. My guide was Randy LaVoie who also guides for Eric occassionally. Randy is a WALKER and we had to slow him down after the second day or he would of been hunting by himself! He was in excellent condition and an excellent guide! When I go back I will ask for Randy to guide me again!

Congratulations on the bear! The Chilcotin Plateau, from Riske Creek near the Fraser River over to Tatla Lake and the Coast Mountains near Anahim is some of the most beautiful country in the BC interior. I have spent a fair bit of time hunting caribou and moose in the Itcha and Ulgatcho Mountains to the north of Tatla and after running into some of the grizzly that call that area home I don't think your .340 was out of place! LoL

I've yet to venture up that highway Boo. I just may have to go for a whiz this summer. Maybe some flyfishing. I've often talked about hitting the upper Dean. ------------------------------- Too many people........

You know now that you mention it I have never been fishing in the Chilcotin! LoL I am usually over there hunting - great waterfowl hunting in certain areas too btw - or, when I was still on the tools, building houses on every reserve from Toosie to Bella Coola! LoL I may have to make a few trips with a fishing rod this fall.
