My brother and I are going with Club Chambeaux out of Shefferville next week. Preliminary emails from those that were just there were that they were in the first quarter of the herd and everyone had gotten two caribou.

From yon far country blows:
What are those blue remembered hills,
What spires, what farms are those?
That is the land of lost content,
I see it shining plain,
The happy highways where I went
And cannot come again.

From SCI "In the Crosshairs":
Storm Brewing Over Caribou in Canada

Anyone have any more information on this???

quote:
Controversy has sprung up between the Innu tribe of Schefferville, Quebec and local hunting outfitters. The Innu have complained that non-native and traveling hunters have affected the migratory routes of caribou and they believe it is this change in migration patterns that has caused them difficult hunting conditions in recent years. Discontent for the traveling hunter has reached the point that a tribal vote has called for a blockade to deter outfitters from entering hunting grounds. This action has caused some local caribou outfitters to cancel all of this year’s hunts for safety concerns and refund all deposits. This is a growing situation, our Canadian representatives are looking into it, and we will keep you posted.

I grew up in Labrador City, just down the train line from Schefferville. I'd be extremely reluctant to go there in recent times. The 'locals' can post adventure to deal with. IMO they are the biggest problem with the caribou migration.

I recall years ago they just went out and shot what ever they seen. Never even bothered with the meat or to pick up the carcasses. It was red snow everywhere.

Were these the same folks who went out and killed caribou (as posted above) "just to show that nobody could stop them"?

I suspect that they'll blame anyone but themselves for problems they (and the caribou) are having.

Too bad.

The Indians and Inuit have completely shut down Shefferville and at least two of the outfitters have moved their operation to Caniapiscau. Now there are seven or eight outfitters operating out of Caniapiscau. I just got back from a good successful hunt with Luco Caribou Adventures of Montreal, American plan, and will go back again. The Leaf River and George River herds (total over a million good and healthy animals) came down and everyone got their bulls alright. Saw a wolf, the northern lights, and the migration; it doesn't get better than that!

I just got back today. The indians have screwed up a lot of hunters trips. We, along with other hunters lost a day of hunting due to not being able to get in to Shefferville.

We went in to Lac Pau which does not have all weather capability. A light snow that would normally have been flyable kept us out the first day of our fly in and the same thing happened to then group following us.

There are rumors that the indians are threatening to burn down the outfitters lodges now.

Times are changing...........research and make sure of what yo are getting into.

Personally I would look at the NWT. Quebec is acrap shoot unless you go with one of the big name guys that have been there a long time.

Cheap is not necessarily good..........and yes cheap is relative.
