I've been steadily narrowing down my battery and upgrading it at the same time. I've dumped about 50 rilfes and kept the best,,
This year:

HB 10/22 custom, SS, custom for well..for beer cans and fun...I suppose a grouse may be shot with this, too.

223 Remington LVSF, a compact, light, accurate rifle, good for yotes out to about 400 or so.

7RM Ruger MKII, SS, semi custom. This was my "go to" gun for many years, killed alot of animals with it. Now it's my "backup" rifle.

300WSm. Custom made by Bill Leeper, Stainless Classic action, Smith barrel, Bansner stock. This rifle shoots damn well and is now my "primary" hunting rifle...180gr TSX bullets group under .75"

375 Ruger Alaskan. Can't wait to shoot a moose or elk with this one. Everything I pointed my 375 H&H at went down in a hurry, I expect the same with this. As an added bonus, this rifle is so short ad compact, that if I was to road hunt for moose (and shooting a moose next to a road is nice) it fits in the front seat so well you don't even notice it.

Binos are 10x42 Leica Ultravids, and the Spotter is a Ziess 15-45. Both a pleasure to look through...

What are you guys using?

Gatehouse...

Fancy meeting you here! I must have missed your sales...my loss.
I plan on using my new Shiloh #1 Sporter 45-2.1. My son has a cow elk draw for our area, east of Wainwright, and I hope he will use the Sharps! If not he'll probably use my Ruger tang safety 308.
For spotting, a Konus scope and a couple pair of old Bushnell binos.
We have a cull going on because of CWD, so we can take a few of each flags and mulies.

Hope to hear a report on how the new Ruger works out.
Later...LeRoy.

Well, I've been on AR for awhile, and through a few different upgrades! Smiler

Hope your id does well with the Sharps, sounds pretty cool...

Well, I hope my Mathews Switchback gets to see some action in the early season. Smiler

I am also looking forward to putting my 375 Ruger African to use. Its my new go-to elk and moose rifle, and might serve light duty in Africa if I can ever afford to do that again. Big Grin

My "backup" rifle is with Bill Leeper for the next little while. Bill's going to rebarrel my 300 Win Mag (Rem 700) to 8mm Rem Mag, with a 25" stainless barrel and new synthetic stock. Should be a great elk rifle in its own right, and am really looking forward to it.

My 6.5 Gibbs (Rem 700 ADL, custom) always gets to go for long walks in pristine country, and hopefully will get a few more this year. I hope it gets its first bighorn this year. thumb

I just got my 220 Swift (Ruger M77) back from my Pa, who has commandeered it for coyote control on his bison ranch (which he recently sold). So, I hope to take that out and do some coyote eradication here in the Kootenays.

For optics, I expect both Swaro's will get lots of use (10x42 EL, 8x30 SLC). I have a set of Leica 10x25s that will probably get a fair bit of use too (whitetails)

My older Swaro spotter is due for an upgrade (its a little bigger and clunkier than I like), but I think it'll have to do for a couple more years...the new additions to my gun safe (the 375 Ruger and 500 A-square) have put my gun/optic fund into life support/intensive care for a while.

Cheers,
Canuck

Tikka M65 .300WinMag, 180grs Barnes-MRX BT, don't know how fast they go, because the chrony crapped out. No back-up. This one's gotta do it all, from sheep, through antelope, to mule deer. And if that client comes, possibly moose too.

Did I mention "no back up"... see, I was fine with that until you fellows started mentioning it! ;-) And the .375HH STILL isn't back, though it's whereabouts has been established (in the RCMP detachment in Ft. Chip). I need to give them another call. :-(

At the 40th Whitecourt Oilmen's Golf Tournament, my Scramble team won first over-all. We shot 13 under par and each of us won $1200.
I'm using my cash to buy some new Taylormade R7 Irons. dancing

Gonna spend some quality time at the course this autumn, before hunting season gets rolling!

I bought a wack of new gear for my upcoming Brown Bear hunt (Sleeping bag, Pack, Rain gear, fleece etc.)....wont get into all of it here, but am looking forward to the Hunt, as well as trying out all the gear.

Was taking my MRC .416 Rem on the Hunt, but the bbl. is pooched. Am now taking my Bansner .338 with 225 TSX's.

I didnt need it, but I bought a used LH Ruger Mark II 7mmRM the other day, its gonna end up as a .358 Norma over the Winter, so I figured I would use it for Deer this Fall with 140 TSX's. Back-up to it could be a .300 Win. mag, or a 7mmSTW. I would also like to get out in the West country and chase a late season Elk around with the .450 Marlin or the other .416 Rem.....time will tell.

As always the Swaro 10X42 SLC's will be around my neck, with a Leuppy 12-40 spotter in the pack.

Good luck to all, this Fall.

I was gona take my 54 cal black powder, but it is so noisy when cocking back, that a bow >>> with rusted pullies would be more useful. So instead I'm going with, old faithful, an 06 with a handfull of cartridges and my Bargain Giant camo shirt to hold the Mars bars and my 1960s (polyester) orange tuque.

And perhaps I might take along my 9,3x62 if I can find a bear den... just to see what will happen at 10 yards. I also bring an almost finished toilet paper roll in a freezer bag which I store in my back pocket just in case I want to rest (break) on a stump.

I also have a $8.00 swede knife, you know the ones with the blue plastic holder and handle...( They keep and edge! and never rust!)

And lastly,I've got a good pair of (name brand and expensive) "hunting" boots which are two yrs old and leak like hell if you walk more than a hundred feet in a stream, but they make me look good. It will be another ten yrs before I can afford plain rubber boots again because of the money I paid for them fancy boots. Gee.

Hmm, what to take? Well, one of the scout rifles in 308 for walking, the 7STW for hayfield work, * Rem Mag for long distance elk, and the 350 rem Mag for close up elk and moose. Hard to carry all those rifles though, I need a gun bearer. - dan

No serious big animal hunts planned so far, so I'll be chaseing Deer this year with my STW and 160 TSXs. If I head north my 338 or 375 could go but I really want to use my Super Express .416 Rem. on something. Haven't shot anything with a .416 for about 13 yrs. For glasses I've got 8x30 SLC Swarovskies and 10x40 Zeiss. My spotter is a 15x45 B&L Elite.

Hmmm!

22rf - Kimber of Oregon (keeper)
22 Hornet - Browning 1885 LoWall (keeper)
270 Win - Winchester M70 Featherweight (would sell or trade for smaller calibre coyote/light deer gun)
300 WSM - Kimber 8400 (very accurate - keeper)
375 H&H - Ruger Safari Magnum (before my Namibian plainsgame hunt I called him "Thumper". Now I call him "The Hammer of Doom" - keeper)
Swarovsky 8.5x42 binos
Bushnell Elite 1500 Rangefinder

I'm good to go!

Now, if you want to talk obsession, ask me about my shotgun collection!

On mny sidelocks pulling the trigger and holding it back while cocking the hammer will give you a silent gun. Just be sure to keep your thumb on the hammer while releasing the trigger.

Enigma, how long is your barrel? It looks reasonably short.

Using the same bullet, and H4350, I get the same velocities form my 375 Ruger with a 20" barrel. It's a great, very accurate load!! Smiler

Hello Gatehouse

The barrel is 24" long... Your case capacity is also bigger. I can get very impressive velocities using 300gr bullets using H4350 and a very compressed load out my 375 H&H. Mind you I'm also using a 24" drop tube Big Grin
