Is there any reason I should not use my 6.5X68 on Elk?

short and fat and hard to get at, hit like a hammer and never been hit back.

I have an original P-64 Mod. 70 Westerner in .264WM and it shoots 140 Nosler Partitions into tiny groups at 3250 fps-mv. This is identical to your 6.5x68 in ballistics and I have seen big bull Elk killed with this load several times and Moose as well.

This, is the smallest bore round I would choose for Elk in my area, (BC) and my feeling on this is that with a premium bullet, you will be just fine and perhaps better off if you are more comfortable with the recoil of this rather than a larger round.

Just check your twist rate before buying heavy (140 on up) bullets. The 6.5x68 was originally loaded with 77-123 grn if I remember right. A pal has one and it will handle 125 noslers, but nothing heavyer.

I also have a 6.5x68, but wouldn't use it for Elk. I have an 8x68S...now that's Elk medicine!

I've killed several elk graveyard dead with a 6.5x55. I don't see any reason why a 6.5x68 wouldn't work. Hit them in the right place and they go all wobble legged and fall over. One thing for sure, those long skinny bullets will penetrate well.

I would use a hard bullet such as Woodleigh, but why should it not work?

Octave What bullet did you have in mind to use?? I have an old Voere rifle in 6.5x68. It shoots great with 129 gr Hornadys and anything lighter. Groups open up to the 3 to 4 inch range with 140's. If you are going to use it on elk I would look at the 125 gr Partion bullet. Hope that helps

6.5x68 not a long skinny long bullet cartridge / rifle as the other classic 6.5's

In factory form ( ie standard factory barrel offerings) it's dictated to by CIP spec and that negates use of the "traditional weight" 6.5 bullets that made the old 6.5 Euro options so successful. Hence then also the relatively light factory bullet weight offerings as seen in popular euro branded ammo.

That does not mean it will not kill, it does so very well ! I have two of them one factory and one custom. even with a 93gr bullet it will put down a big Northenr BC bull Moose

I was going to use 129 Hornadys, the rifle I have for this is a left handed bolt action Blaser.I have seen here that people are suggesting bigger calibers.I also have barrels in 8X68 and 9.3 x64.Sounds like I should maybe using these calibers on my rifle as all I have to do is change the barrel.
