Me and a buddy are planning to hunt blackbear for the first time this spring,we have looked at some offers in BC and Alberta, but some outfitters recomands early may,and others late may/early june to be the best time.We have never been to Canada before,so it is therfore difficult for us to decide "what`s the best time"for a blackbear spring hunt?Any advice??.(you have to excuse my landuage/writing)

I'd have to second the last week in May, or maybe the week before. The weather can be so damned unpredictable here and a lot of the time it doesn't get warm enough for the bears to be active, until later. Franz and I got three bears the third week of May, last year, and we sure weren't running around in our tee shirts. Big Grin
Grizz

In Central BC, the last of May to the first week of June is good. It's a small window but will give better chances of a non rubbed pelt.

The axiom is this, the bears become more active the later you go however pelt quality goes downhill. I am an ardent bear hunter and can go anytime I wish. I choose to go the last week of May i.e. after the May long weekend when every drunken teenager is racing through the woods on a quad.

Sako 75, as suggested last week in May to early June. If its a cold spring, not too many bears out. If you hunt later in June, the hides are starting to show rub signs. Also a mid fall hunt are good too. Bears hitting the oat fields pretty hard to fatten up for the winter. Could even combo up a hunt for a whitetail or mulie too in the fall.

Good choice on rifle. I have a few Sako m75 and a couple of Tikka T3's.

Check out this site for an outfitter in NW Alberta. Good people.

Good luck on your quest for a black bear or color-phased blackie!

Tough to say, since as Grizz said, much depends on the weather. Beginning of June mating is supposed to be on the bears mind, apparently the bears are less certain on the bait, but the chance to meet big boars should be good. Early May is risky, though this year Grizz and I hunted the second week in May and did well, with plenty of bears around.

Go with the 416, if not for anything else but fun!! Hell it makes a piss poor decoration, in the safe. So you might as well use it.

Contrary to Walt Disney, the average black bear only weighs about 250 lbs. [120 Kg.?] and the most important point is to hit him well, not how a big hole you punch in him. if you hunt with an outfitter in Alberta, you'll probably spend most your time sitting in a tree stand, over a bait, fending off the mosquitoes. Big Grin The Range will be well under a hundred meters. I own a .338, but I usually end up taking my 7mm Rem., because I KNOW I can split hairs with it, whereas I don't have the confidence to do the same with the .338.

Thanks again.Corect me if i am wrong, but as i understand most bears hunted over a bait are shot early morning or late evening.thats my main reason to bring the 7mm,becourse it is scoped with a SB 2,5-10*56 and therefore is perfect for hunting in poor light,as well as in daylight ofcourse.I am looking forward to this bearhunt, only thing left is to decide where to go,but it is going to be either Alberta or BC,becourse of the 2 bear possibility.
Regards Sako 75.

I think the 7mm Rem Mag is a fine choice. If I may,I suggest you use a 165 or 175 gr bullet. I have taken a couple of bears here in Alberta with my 7mm-08. None got away, and all were one shot kills.
I have to agree with the consensus about the last week in May as being the best time. Albert springs can be fickle, so thats the safe bet. Good luck.

P.S. May I ask what area of Albert you are planning to hunt?

I got my black bear in Aug. The fir was fine.
I killed him the 16th at 5:30 PM. I was in Ontario. Lots of black bears.

I've never hunted black bears in the spring.

All three are fine choices. Lots of dense bush around slave lake and FT. McMurray. Anywhere in northern Alberta would be a good choice. Smithers is mountainous area.

No baiting in BC I seem to recall?? Some of the AB outfitters I know don't even go out in the morning. You'll be in the stand from 3pm or so till dark, which up north comes very late.

BTW, this spring I ran into four bears in a bait area around 10 am.

Bring a head net! ;-)
