I'm heading to Alaska on September 10th for a combo Moose/grizzly hunt. I only found out I was going for sure on Friday. That gives me three weeks to get the permits or have to borrow a rifle. Is there any way to speed up the process. Does anyone have any pointers to help me along? I have my registration to fax, is there anything else I need to do/ Has anyone ever heard of getting a 3 week turn around lately or should I forget it and plan to buy a new rifle and have it shipped there or borrow one. I really want to use my own rifle for sentimental reasons.

Thanks guys...

Sheldon I presume you have a copy of your license/tags to fax in with your form 6 application? They claim they need 60 days and everyone I have received has been close to that. I sure hope I am wrong but I would get prepared for plan "B". ie/ borrowing a rifle.

I believe it would be 'technically' illegal for a non resident alien to borrow a rifle. It is in Canada and it is illegal for a non resident alien to posses a firearm in Washington.

I have my registration and a letter from my outiftter saying I will be hunting during those dates. I do not get my license until I arrive.

I will try as hard as possible to convince them to expedite things and if necessary borrow a rifle. Does someone have a link to that form 6? Thanks all.

Sheldon Try http://www.atf.gov form6 then click on lost target ATF form6NIA updates. There is all the info you should need plus fax #s to the ATF. Good luck my friend. PS I am using Yahoo as a search engine.

If the lender is able to provide immediate supervision---- such as being in close proximity--- it is legal to borrow a gun in Canada. Being hundreds of yards away would be a different story. Despite some Americans objection to our law it beats a three month wait.

I am SOL.

BATF says at LEAST 8 weeks. They are moving their offices so they are even futher behind than the 6-8 weeks they list on the forms. They still have not processed applications from June. Frowner

Sheldon Sorry to hear that. Just a suggestion. If you are planning any sort of a hunt into the US as soon as you can ,purchase a conservation license. They are cheap and you can apply for your form 6 with a conservation license. That way you have your form 6 in your hand by about April. Most of the draws for licenses don't take place until June or July and it is often late Aug before you actually get your license in the mail. That doesn't leave much time to apply for a form 6 then. You end up in the situation you are in right now. Good luck next year.

Sheldon

A lot of my friends buy the North Dakota non res. Lic. as it is the cheapest around. With this Lic. you can apply for the form 6 and have it ready for any hunt anywhere in the US.

Thanks Mickey!

I just bought a furbearer's and small game license. I am only an hour away from the ND border and they have good coyote and fox hunting down there. We are the ad agency for FOXPRO game calls and I am hoping to try some of the calls out this fall/winter. I didn't realize I could even get a license down there for furbeares, but not only can I buy a license, I can hunt there for coyotes and fox year round except for two weeks of deer season!! Woo HOO!
