Just got back from a scouting/hunting trip today. I went out looking to find a good area for later on in the season when the bucks are in rut and with any luck find a few elk as well. Saw some older elk sign quite a bit of it and some pretty good moose sign as well. Saw lots of mule deer does and fawns and three whitetail does with fawns. All the deer looked big and healthy. I saw one very nice whitetail buck who spotted me at the same time as I spotted him as I walked down a cut line. He had pretty good head gear I could see it from about 200 yards away but could not get the binocs on him fast enough to see how good he was. With just the naked eye I would have to say he was a shooter. I was hoping to run into a nice big dry doe for the freezer on this trip and got my wish at 12:00 pm. Pretty simple 100 yard quartering towards shot she went down so fast I thought I had missed. Walked down to dress her and spotted a Black Bear about 400 yards further up the cut line feeding along the edge. I glassed the bear for a couple of min's decided it was a clean bear in good shape and if I could get close enough a shooter. I closed the distance to about 200 yards the wind was wrong and the bear got a wiff of me but did not take off but started to move off stopping smelling and looking in my direction. I had already gone prone and when the bear stopped I centerd the crosshairs on the shoulder and fired. The bear went down got up did a 360 bighting at the wound and took off heading away from me on and angle towards some really nasty thick bush. I am still in awe of how fast bears can cover distance and this one was leaving town in a hurry. I fired a second time aming at the base of the neck and wound up getting a texas heart shot. The bear piled up on the edge of the cut line. Not a monster but a good clean bear with excellent fur. I can't guess at age but it is missing some teeth and the remaning teeth are well worn so I would have to say it is getting up in years. I took some pics they are not the best as I am awfull with camera's. I have not put a tape on it yet but I figure 6 feet and a bit. It will make an excellent rug I am sure.

Nice 'scouting' trip. From your pic it looks like you had some really nice weather to boot.

Did you learn that shot from shootaway? How far did you have to drag the Doe and Bear? Congratulations on a great day afield, with plenty to show for it.

Nope only about 100 rounds down the barrel So if I can get 3000 plus out of a 220 Swift before accuracy goes away, I should be good for a very very long time with that there .280 Rem I gots Bullet drop pure plain and simple based on the rifles PBR I have zeroed for. Put your tinfoil hat back on so the bad vibes don't get you.

Do not mind at all E town As you know for me 2-1/2 or 3 hours in any direction gets me in the right places for whatever I am looking for.

Drove my Chevy right up to the deer but due to swampy conditions I could only get to about 250 yards to the bear. Pretty sore legs and shoulders the last couple of days. After riding in a boat for 3 hours today wading in waist deep water and shooting a full limit of ducks I am played out for the week. Should be good to go again for the weekend. Hopefully we will be able to get the geese in this time. Only got two to give the deeks a once over out of range for any shooting.
