I am working on a mtn goat hunt in BC for 2008. Some of the outfitters I have looked at throw in a black bear with their goat hunts. I would like to take a 270 for goats but don't know how it would perform on big BC black bears. I realize a well placed shot with a 270 is adequate for many things. However, if anyone has any experiences (good or bad) I would like to hear about them. Thx

A 270 is plenty for our black bears.

I have killed them with a 6.5 Gibbs, 30-30, 308 Win and 300 Win Mag. There was no real difference in effectiveness on bears.

Cheers

It's shot placement, not caliber you have to worry about. I have taken nine or ten with a .270. The only problem I ever had was do to a bad shot by me.

Shouldnt be a problem. Not sure what grain bullet you will be shooting, but anything that will take a sheep should cleanly take a black bear if you do your part.

I've killed black bears wiht 270, 30-30, 303 British, 300Win Mag, 338 WM, 300WSM, 7RM, and 375 H&H....

The one I shot wiht the 270 died just as well as the other ones, although the 375 H&H *does* seem to floor them a bit better than anything else Smiler

Your 270 will work on black bears but be sure to use a good bullet such as the Partition, TSX or equal. A 130 grain cup & core bullet at close range on a fall-fat bear may well fail to penetrate deeply enough to take out both lungs on a bear that may tip the scales at over 500 pounds.
