I will be living back in AB in 2009/part of 2010 and again in 2011/2012.

Last time I hunted Whitetail I simply bought a tag from SRD. I didn't enter for any draws.

In 09 I would like to hunt Mulies, black bear and moose. Do I have to enter draws for these for any tag (bear I can just purchase right?)

For Mulie and Moose are there WMU's in the foothills or parkland you can just purchase tags for or is it by draw only?

Last time I was after WT I had many opportunities for Mulies..I will contact SRD obviously but thought I would ask here too.

Oh yes, I am also in search of a Baikal combo gun preferably 12ga over .308 or .30-06 but will considered others too.

Thanks, any help is appreciated!

Brian

Kayaker,

Without a copy of the regs at hand I can't give any details, but the link below should get you your answers.

www.srd.gov.ab.ca/fishwildlife...hunting/default.aspx

I think the answer to you questions will depend on whether you'll qualify for licensing purposes as a resident or not. If you are a landed immigrant living in Alta, you'd get a Resident license, otherwise you'd get a Non-Resident Alien license. If you are an NRA, take a close look at the regs, it's not too hard to go hunting with a friend on a non-commercial basis.

One way or another, deer and bear shouldn't be a problem. Even if you have to enter a draw for mulies, you may not need prefference points to be drawn and there is always the chance of buying unfilled quota. I think you should be able to get 2 bear licenses over the counter. The last time I looked, the only place in Alta with over the counter moose was in the far north east. That is the bad news. The good news is that a few outfitters offer DIY hunts in that region. They'll fly you and whatever food/gear you're taking out of Ft. Mac to a cabin supplied with a boat and gas. A week or two later, they'll come back to get you and your moose. Or start looking for your body if things don't work out so well Smiler.

What brings you back to Alberta?

Cheers,
Dean

Thanks Dean, yep, been reading regs getting up to scratch and learning the ins-and-outs of draws!

Last time hunting WT around Bashaw on a friends farm I had so many shots at Mulies I vowed to not go afield again without a Mulie tag!

I am a grad student, starting PhD. Apparently because live in AB full time while at school (more than 6 months in province) I am a 'non-resident deemed resident' and can get resident licenses.

I am very keen to come hunt birds in the south of the province. I shot some farm pheasant with friends from Calgary in Brooks in 2007 which was fun. I would love to try for wild ones and Sharptails although I have no dog so stick to affordable Huns close to home!

I do want to make a good go of big game in 2009, I may have to forgo moose but wll definately get tagged up for deer and bear. I'll ask if I can get Mulie tags over the counter like WT tags.

Cheers
Brian

Over the counter tags are available for mule deer in some WMUs but not in most. Depending what area, it will likely take several years to draw one with our priority draw system. Whitetails are available over the counter in 95% of the province. Moose are on draw everywhere. Black bear are on a general tag everywhere.

You'll really need to consult the regs to see the licence requirements for the WMU you'll be hunting.
