Guys I'm headed to Lynn Lake, Manitoba to hunt black bears with Grey Owl Outfitters. We will hunt from May 30- June 5th. What can I expect, hunt wise, and weather. All references were great. Of course the fishing is outstanding. All inclusive hunt. This will be a bowhunt. Thanks for the comments.

Beautiful country up in Lynn Lake! As for weather, expect anything. Just be sure to take enough clothes so that you can layer, some mornings can be below freezing, but daily temps get up into the high teens and even into the 20's C (High 50's on up into the mid 70's F). Enjoy your trip, good luck on your hunt, and be sure to provide details!

I sure will. Can't hardly wait. From what I've been told, this is big bear country!

I've bowhunted up there a dozen times or so. Consider taking a fly rod (about 8 weight with some large red and white sinking streamers and about 20" of 50 pound leader). Ain't nothing like catching a 45" pike on a fly. Your problem will not be seeing bears, but deciding what is a "big" bear. I've never taken one up there less than 18" and a couple of over 20"... so be pretty sure of size before you shoot. There are plenty of colored bears up there, too. Believe it or not, this is an average bear. I believe its skull was about 19 3/16". It was the third bear on the bait that evening. Note that I'm wearing rain gear. It was spitting snow and about 35 degrees. I've also hunted at the same time of year and worn only a t-shirt. Make sure to have a Thermacell. Mosquitoes show up on radar, but are very tolerable if you spray your clothes (gloves and hat, too) with permetherin and wear a face mask, even without a Thermacell. Also, if its dry, there will probalby be some brush fires. No big deal, usually, but we once had to leave a lake early because of one. When looking at the below picture, consider that I was about 265#'s at the time the picture was taken and the bear was a lot bigger than I was. I thought I had a picture of the biggest bear I took up there, but can't find it. It squared well over 7' and Fred Asbell (then president of P&Y and who was hunting with me) told me that it was the largest bodied bear he had ever seen. I know that four of us tried to get it in the boat and couldn't, so we skinned it on the spot. It was the fifth bear on the bait that evening and clearly the boss. I believe his head was 20 1/2".... ???? If you have plenty of patience, try hunting in the morning at least one day. Boars will be roaming everywhere, checking baits to see if sows have been around. I've found it productive, but since you'll be in the stand in the evenings from 5:00 p.m. until 11:00 or so, you probably don't want to do mornings every day. JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

I found a picture (not so good) of the bigger bear. This picture was after it was field-dressed so some of the bulk is gone, but it had a huge head and squared well over 7'. JudgeG ... just counting time 'til I am again finding balm in Gilead chilled out somewhere in the Selous.

Mike You must be getting anxious to get on with your hunt. Just thought I would let you know we had an inch of snow a couple days ago but the weather is changing. Should see daytime highs in the 60s F next week. Good luck on your hunt.

Hope you have a great trip. I've been thinking of going on a black bear hunt maybe next year, and this is one of the places that I'm looking at. Can't wait for your report. Lots of pictures Jeff No people in history have ever survived who thought they could protect their freedom by making themselves inoffensive to their enemies.
