What does everyone prefer to carry for protection while in the bush. I'm looking at either a Defender or a bigbore lever action.

I carried a defender for 12 years while working in remote locations. Now most people I know still out in the bush carry 45/70 guide guns and wont go back to 12 ga. I guess it depends if you are working or recreating.

Lets get serious guys. Many people think that a 12 gauge and slugs is the best form of protection in the woods. The winchester defender is a common choice. Especially with a pistol grip/no stalk. But it is also a good idea to have extra shells avalible in a habdy location in case you need to reload real fast (a heard of bears attack?)

This is my sister by the way.

Could you introduce her to my brother Manfred? He's a plumber in Rocky and could use someone with a 12 gauge to keep him in line. Looks are imaterial Big Grin

I like the position of the safety on the Mossberg 500 Persuader better. I've tried these guns with the safety on the trigger guard on the far side and with a normal hold on the grip I can't reach it. Short fingers. I've handled some with the safety on the near side, and don't care for those much either. A flip of the thumb comes most natural to me...

BTW, Grizzly A., if your brother Manfred can't get along with her, maybe we can invite her along to cover our backs, while we put out bait in a few weeks time. I promise I won't tell yours, if you won't tell mine!

Grizz, Not sure if she "can skin" but she could "hold your leg", if you like.

(she is not really my sister. But sometimes when I have a far away look and a smile on my face, I have to tell my wife "I was just thinking about going hunting with my sister.")

Another trick picture. If you look long enough you will see the shotgun.

I have a purpose built Model 12 Winchester that holds 7 rounds(normal mag) and it works for me. I normally have a trap round in the chamber when I prospect and thus far the noise alone has been enough to deter the blackies. I also reload my own shotshells and they are some potent! Big Grin derf

I disassociate myself from RM007's remarks. Smiler (People from Arizona know nothing about bear hunting. We Americans who are experts about bear hunting love to insult each other) All serious people know that one ounce of lead at 6 feet from a 12 ga. is going to do damage. As a rifleman, I lean to a 30-30 in the eye to really plant him! Smiler (No, I never had to do it, but doesn't it stand to reason?) Smiler

BS aside, it depends on the province. In Ontario, if you're found in the bush with a firearm by a CO, you are assumed to be hunting. No hunting licence, you get charged with hunting without a licence. If you have any firearm suitable for taking game deer sized or bigger, you get charged with hunting out of season. Varmints, ground hogs, crows, coyotes, etc, require a small game hunting licence. There is no such thing as personal protection.
Mind you, in the 30 some years I've been wandering about in the bush, I've never once had any occasion to need any kind of protection. Yogi, doesn't see you as food. He considers you as nothing but trouble.
If you think being in the bush is dangerous, stay home. You're more trouble than any beastie that lives there.

Spelling and grammar count.
