I have cancer and before it's too late I would like to go on a moose hunt. But I need one I can handle physically. I was thinking of a river float hunt or crusing around a lake trying to call one (I know such hunts exist) Alaska is out of the question. So I was thinking Sk or MB, AB or BC would be ok if I didn't have to ride horses or walk too much. Any suggestions as to an outfitter that might take me on, would be much appreciated.

A lot of the outfitters in mid and northern b.c. use jet boats any of the more popular hunting mags have listings you could try calling some you find there but you should hurry becase the season opens in a couple weeks

I asked your location, because if you were an Ontario resident and a bowhunter (crossbows are very legal here), I may have been able to connect you with a group of bowhunters who have a group tag. Our firearms season normally starts at or near the end of the rut, so stationary hunting isn't the most successful then. Manitoba was a good suggestion, also, Newfoundland is a place where you can get a guided hunt during the rut, but I believe you have to be somewhat mobile to hunt the general terrain out there. Quebec requires two hunters per animal taken, so it's not high on the list of most non-residents. Hunting is Exciting! Bolt Actions are BORING! Don't Mix the Two!

Hey Hard Luck I'm a guy who lives outside of Prince George B.C. I'm also a guy with a severe heart condition and a big bull draw in B.C. (zone 7-15). I visited a guy I met on the internet last year and he took me fishing "In Australia". I asked the same type of questions you are (who's the best guide for the area? do they take gimps etc.? (I'm allowed to say that as I are one haha). Several of the Aussies came back with "hey as long as you aren't some internet freak, I'll take you" and they did! And it was great! So I guess it's my turn to buck-up. As I was once given a great kindness. So, as long as you aren't some internet freak. I'll take you. I live outside of Prince George B.C. We don't have a fancy home but it's warm and the kids are gone (haha). We wouldn't have to travel far to get our moose. I plug in the Meatloaf song "Bat out of Hell" which is about 9 minutes long, and at the end of it we are hunting (Yes really). I hunt out of my little dodge dakota and we have a good selection of strong guys available once we drop it. I was raised to believe that doing a kindness was actually a selfish act as my mother still believes to this day that it is always given back 2 fold. And people have been so good to me lately I gotta catch up. you'd be doing me a favour. Gerry bellhender@hotmail.com

bellhender, No offence intended, but I suggest that you may want to keep this kind of act of kindness on the down-low. If HardLuck was Canadian it would be a different story, BUT, it is STRICTLY illegal in BC for you to take a non-resident alien on a moose hunt, unless they are a direct relation and you have the appropriate paperwork (permit to accompany, non-resident licences, etc). You'd be risking your pickup truck, your rifles, hunting gear etc, not to mention losing your hunting licence for a while and getting a whopper of a fine. I do agree with you and your Ma about acts of kindness and commend you for your generosity, however. Cheers, Canuck

Try Birch Creek Outfitters in Northern Alberta. Their website is: http://www.birchcreekhunts.com If they don't have any openings they may be able to direct you to someone that has.

Didn't realize that my company had to be a legal hunter in Canada. Just thought he could sit in the truck with me! I've been a legal hunter all my life and presumed that a person (any person) could sit in the truck and watch me. Thanks Canuck. Didn't know.

I don't think there is anything technically illegal about that (a non-resident observer). If your company was in possession of a firearm or was construed (or witnessed) to be "hunting", however, that is a different story. Conservation officers can be pretty hard on "non-resident observer" situations though, since that is how most illegal guiding is camoflaged. Much easier to deal with fishing and/or small game bird hunting. Outfitters are not required. Just licences over the counter. hard luck: for an outfitted moose hunt in BC, check out http://www.goabc.org Lots of outfitters to choose from. I can recommend a few if you like, once you've narrowed down the type of moose hunt you want (truck, horse, boat), the type of moose you want (Alaska Yukon, Canada, Shiras...trophy or average bull), and how much your budget will allow. Cheers, Canuck
