I just got home this AM from a 6 day "business" trip to MB. I say "business" that way because I stayed over for the weekend and managed to sneak in some duck hunting and fishing for "greenbacks"!! It was a blast! My friends that had been extolling the virtues of MB's hunting and fishing opportunities were not exaggerating. Smiler I am both glad and grateful that they finally talked me into getting in some R&R while in the province.

Here's a pic of us after a fun morning of duck hunting...it was a foggy morning and a little slow, but still fun. 5 hunters got 22 birds in a couple hours. Mostly teal, with a few mallards.

Here's some pic's from the pickerel fishing the next day. 4 of us got a limit of nice greenbacks in a couple of hours....

I had never fished for pickerel before...it was a great time. But I have to say, it was tough to top the fish-fry that evening....that stuff makes for some top notch eating!!

Cheers,
Canuck

Chris,

Yep, those are 'eyes, best eating fish ever. Pickerel look much like northern pike and muskellunge.

Canuack,
Isn't it great when bussiness improves ones hunting and fishing opertunities. clap

If you have that much to fight for, then you should be fighting. The sentiment that modern day ordinary Canadians do not need firearms for protection is pleasant but unrealistic. To discourage responsible deserving Canadians from possessing firearms for lawful self-defence and other legitimate purposes is to risk sacrificing them at the altar of political correctness."

I don't know jack about pickerel/walleye...never fished 'em before. All I do know is that the locals call 'em pickerel most of the time (walleye other times) and the MB fishing regs seem to use the terms interchangeably.

Again, this is my first experience with them...I got the impression it was two names for the same fish (walleye being more "official" usage, pickerel being more "common" usage).

Interested to learn more from those of you in the know though!

And no matter what they are called....Mmmmmmmmmmmm!

Cheers,
Canuck

ADDED:

ps: found this on Wikipedia, which explains a bunch of my confusion....

quote:
In some parts of its range, the walleye is also known as the walleyed pike, yellow pike or pickerel (esp. in English-speaking Canada), although the fish is related neither to the pikes nor to the pickerels, both of which are members of the family Esocidae.

MB has some great sportsmen's opportunities, I lived there for 10 years and still get back once in a while. Great fishing, nice deer, some fantastic black bears, and lot's of moose (well, where I lived anyway). They have elk as well, and more birds then you can shake a stick at. - dan

I grew up in Manitoba. The fish that Canuck is holding up is called a pickerel by Manitobans. The usage may be wrong, but that's what they call it. Pike are called jackfish, and a hamburger is called a nip (as in, let's go out for a nip and chips!).

Canuck,

Pickerel or walleye, both terms get used alot here and fishing for them in the fall is the best time, usually on the Red river near the lake. Did you catch any Sauger?

If you get the chance try one cooked in just a little butter, no breading ... yummy!

Guess we'll see you back in Manitoba next fall for another business meeting! Smiler

We didn't. I was hoping to see one though, as they are new to me too. We did catch a few perch.

And, yep, after a couple days like that, I'll make it happen every time I can! I hope to be able to take my Pa out there next fall....he's an avid fisherman and has never caught a walleye either.

Cheers,
Canuck
