I'd like to learn about bear hunts!
We all need to aim for something or at least have a dream on the go - I have decided that Dangerous Game in Africa will probably be beyond my pocket. Even buffalo across the way in Aus is really pricey.
But Black Bear?... hunts around the 3.5k to 4.5k mark. For me, flights from NZ to Vancouver fairly attainable and I'm guessing I don't need to go buying a new rifle with lots of expensive ammo. (I have a 308 and shoot it pretty well - but if I need a new rifle.... oh well Wink)

So what could I expect from a Black Bear hunt - spot and stalk, in British Columbia?

I would really like to hear anything you can say - hunt stories, pictures, do's and dont's, top tips... I'm interested about it all!

B.C. is infested with Black Bears & Wolves. A trip to Vancouver Island will get you a big one.
2 tags per licence are allowed, not sure how the Guide will charge that.
If you need a bigger rifle I can lend you a 338 Win Mag. I have friends at or near all the hotspots.

Cheers
Bruce

You might contact "Chilcotin Hillbilly" who posts here and see what he offers; he operates in some very beautiful country and there are LOTS of bears all over BC.

Your .308 with good bullets, such as Nosler Partitions, will be fine for Blacks and just make sure that your Guide-Outfitter keeps a spare rifle in camp should yours develop problems. This can happen and one would not want a costly hunt ruined as a result....or, get another rifle and bring two, as I do on all hunts, just in case.

Hard to go wrong with a spot-N-stock spring bear hunt in BC! One thing to consider when choosing an area to hunt is that the climate on the Island is somewhat similar to the North Island in NZ......so if you are looking to hunt an area that is a quite a bit different than the bush back home you may want look further north in the province. as already stated, the 308 is plenty for bear! Have fun!
