I have watched that video several times and it is my opinion, based on considerable experience with Grizzlies, while working alone in BC wilderness, that this sow was NOT "charging" as we understand that word. I think that she WAS bluffing and investigating and that the guy did EXACTLY the right thing and all concerned "went home in a limo". If, she had decided to make contact, she would have come in fast and straight and not been detered by the relatively puny muzzle blast of a .44M revolver. She WOULD have had him and possibly killed him, so, he was both lucky and disciplined and did what he should have. There has been just appalling "hate" mail and comments on various Canadian foroums about this and other recent Grizzly incidents....Canada is now largely an urban society and most people here have not clue bloody one about Grizzlies, wilderness or much beyond their "human rights, entitlment, phoney-greeny" mindset. I will say, having been there and closer to three different Grizzlies than he was, I much prefer a shorty .375 for situations like that.

Twice I have had yearling blk bear come in on me like a cat on a rabbit, front quarters down, butt up in air, and ears going like crazy back and forth. First time about 22 years back at steamboat along AK highway; which I have on cam corder. I wish I could put it on you tube. You can actually see the tips of my tennis shoes in picture. Thats how close the bear was until I waved/yelled it off. Second time was here in Alaska and that one I shot when he put the sneak on me. Funny thing is most people have never heard of such a thing, call me a liar, say blk bear never attack, but then here and there people at logging camps & rural areas have experienced the same situation. Same as many people have never heard that blood curdling scream a young porky makes when startled. I have one friend who has been mauled twice in his life, was a guide. When at a lodge, late at night and a few beers; he'll pull off his shirt and drop pants; you should see the scars. This guy hates bear, all bear, shoots everyone he sees. People in rural Ak also shoot pretty much every bear they see too, especially around a village. They don't care too much about if the bear is making a false charge or not; they get shot on the spot as dangerous pests. We have way too many bear anyway, the moose need our help in keeping their numbers in check, same with old wolf.
