Gentlemen,
Elk season just openned here in Fort St John, BC, and I am hunting them, as usual. The problem is that I have not seen one while hunting for the last three years. Am I doing something wrong, or is that normal? What do ya'll do to find elk, call them in (which I have been trying this year), or otherwise locate them? I am not asking anyone to disclose a secret location, just a frustrated beginner looking for help. Any information, resourses, tips or tricks would be very much appreciated. Thanks and good hunting to you all.
Regards,
Graham

You will not find that many elk of shooting quality right around FSJ. There are some large herds to the west of FSJ around Rose Prairie but the natives usually take most of the good bulls.

Farms/ranches in the valleys surrounded by hills = hundreds of elk. There are several areas west of FSJ that contain a lot of elk. Talk nice to the ranchers/farmers and they will point you in the right direction.

Also along major rivers and drainages.

Go to McElhanney (survey company with office in FSJ) and get a copy of their Northeastern British Columbia Road Atlas. This shows all the back road (logging and lease) to get into these areas. This will cost about $200 but is well worth it.

The hills to the West of Dawson Creek and FSJ contain hundreds of elk. The bulls should be starting to bugle there soon if not already.
You will have to be there early in the morning and stay late at night if you want to track them down.

The area north of Hudson's Hope is also good. Lots of cutblocks and logging roads along the Williston Lake drainage.

You are pretty much situated in Elk central. Do not give up.

GOOD HUNTING!!!

Thank you, sir! On the other forum one of the suggestions was to get a plane ticket for New Mexico. While that would be fun, it is not all that practical. You must have lived in the area or at least spent a lot of time here to know about Rose Prairie. I lived there for about 9 years, and currently reside in FSJ. Thanks again for the info, and I will post any success here.
Regards,
Graham

You are welcome.

I lived in FSJ for 6 years and did quite a bit of hunting.

Let me know how you are making out and if you need any more help I can PM you some more detailed info about areas to try.
