http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...-tennessee-1.2774287 Grizzly victim identified as Kenton Novotny of Tennessee Man died while bear hunting in N.W.T. last week CBC News Posted: Sep 22, 2014 11:45 AM CT Last Updated: Sep 22, 2014 11:54 AM CT N.W.T. wildlife officials to search for killer grizzly bear Bear kills hunter near Norman Wells, N.W.T. The man killed by a grizzly bear near Norman Wells, N.W.T., last week has been identified as Kenton Novotny of Tennessee. The 53-year-old businessman from Germantown, Tenn., was killed about 230 kilometres south of Norman Wells on Sept. 17. He had travelled to the North to go hunting in the Mackenzie Mountains. Novotny was with a guide. They'd just shot an animal when the grizzly attacked. A spokesperson with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said officials with the department found and destroyed the bear on Saturday. They are certain it was the same bear that killed Novotny but they are doing DNA testing to confirm. They say it is up to guides to train hunters on how to be safe while out hunting.

From what I saw in the NWT, the grizzlies have zero fear of humans. That in and of itself makes them seriously dangerous. One always has to stay alert. Condolences to the family.

Yes the limited hunting the NWT Mackenzie Mountain bears see does little to educate them. They show the least fear/respect of pretty well any grizz I've seen. It's been a bad year for hunters and bear encounters. I just heard of another in BC. I'm sure the Peta people will be dancing in the streets that the bears are finally fighting back.

When we went to see the wildlife people in Norman Wells to plug my sheep, they told us about another incident this year, south of Norman Wells if I recall correctly. I believe a black bear killed a woman, perhaps at an oil facility. We have had 2 black bear attacks in my home county this year. Not a good year for bear/human interaction.

They had just shot a Moose. There is so little information given, its impossible to make any sort of call as to what happened. TJ, you make it sound like its too bad that the MacKenzies see so little hunting. IMO, thats a good thing as it keeps the area wild. You want tame, go somewhere else. Interior mountain Griz always tend to be much more aggressive than coastal varieties, they have to be as the feed is not as prevalent. It just goes with the territory. Too bad none the less. Anyone know if it was Stan's area? 237 KM SW of NW puts it right near Mac pass.

I actually said there was little GRIZZLY HUNTING in the Mackenzies and made no comment on hunting in general in the Mackenzies ...As Medved pointed out, perhaps if there was more GRIZZLY HUNTING the bears would act differently in the NWT.

The grizzlies in the Mackenzies have been semi-protected for decades…….. at least 30 years. But they are still under draw for residents as far as I know. /Could be wrong. However grizzlies on a moose kill is hardly anything unusual and grizzlies coming to shots is not either. Hunters need to keep their wits about them in these environments. Never seen such a bunch of pansies…… maybe we should just hunt grizzlies behind high fence like African lion/lionesses in much of RSA. Ya wouldn't that be cleaner and safer. Man killers……….. get a grip on it. She reacted and the result is sad indeed, but the bear was just doing what bears do. Lets not be theatrical about the unfortunate death of the chap. Everyone that knows him is sad…………. but things like this happen. And no, if it happened to me when I am out there I would be pissed if they worried about killing the bear. ______________________________________________ The power of accurate observation is frequently called cynicism by those who are bereft of that gift.

Kelly, i think you are right on with your writing. i may add that in NWT and Mckenzie it s a lifetime tag for residents. so the bears do not associate human and danger that much, seems in BC and Alberta problems and encounters are getting more and more, a few hunted bears will be good but not a slaughter no way. we know that because we are in grizzly country and that is so important for a lot of reasons. we have been charged too a few times and a good friend had a very close call after they shoot and killed a moose last week (bear is still alive) and i will never ask for a bear to be killed especially a sow and cubs at that time of the year. when i posted that article it was not about being scared but just to bring up and be aware. what i know about bears is i dont rely on bear spray that we are a few up here to call bear seasoning and that there is not a bear that is the same so each situation is different.

If it was Stan's area there are lots of grizzly and likely virtually no hunting of the bruins in his country. I saw four two with cubs in my short hunt in that beautiful country. I think only locals are allowed to hunt them and for a local to get to Stan's area it is a long walk from Norman wells. Very sad story indeed.
