I have an interview next week for a job in Ottawa (I have a lot of job interviews, lately Roll Eyes ).

How is it? I am guessing that it is 15-30% more expensive than an American city of the same size.

Trying to get promoted so we can max out the 401K, I think I have about 15 more working years left before I can't work anymore. Too many hard knocks in the military.

Well it is nice enough country, but it has a few negatives.

It's a city.

It's too close to the Greater Toronto area.

It's too close to Quebec. Wink

The Ontario provincial government is currently a bunch of Liberal twits.

It is full of politicians and political hacks.

Not a huge amount of hunting and fishing in close, but Ontario is a big province and you just need to get out and away from the huge population in the Ottawa/GTA to find good hunting and fishing.

Did I mention Ottawa is full of politicians?

We'll see how it goes, I talked to them this morning.

We'd only be there for a few years, it isn't forever.

I am opposed to wearing a suit and tie, and I am also interviewing for other jobs that don't require this. So if we get to it and that's a problem compounded by the fact that like you said it is a city and the hunting/fishing is far away I probably won't take it if they offer it to me.

I don't have anything against a suit and tie, but I wore one for 3 years in Australia and I was miserable.

Actually, the area around Ottawa (say from Ottawa to Kingston) has among the highest deer densities in the province. So much so that some of the more militant farmers will hold culling drives.

It's also where the southernmost concentration of moose is in Ontario, but good luck drawing a tag.

Bear hunting in cottage country around the area is nothing to sneeze at, either. Not many outfitters but if you can hook up with a hunt camp...

Fishing in the Ottawa river is good for walleye, pike, muskie, bass, catfish and even sturgeon are present. Also decent flyway of ducks and geese.

Realistically, it's 4 hours east of Toronto but has its own share of urban twits. You're going to find that pretty much anywhere nowadays. Hell, I live 1.5 hours west of Toronto in farm country and while we have twits Toronto bs doesn't get in the way of my local hunting opportunities.

And the surrounding country is scenic and wild. You're about 1.5 hours from Algonquin Park, one of the largest in North America.

Thanks again, talked to them this morning so far still in the running. This office has their stuff together. Which is really unusual for the outfit I work for.

BWW......... now realize that although I do not think that the hunting and fishing near Ottawa is that great, I WAS joking about the Ottawa area. Well sort of. Not joking about the GTA.

Anyways, sure there is some fishing to be done in the area and some hunting as per what Wannabebwana said. I tend to view things differently as I am spoiled due to where I live and work. I also do not like people so my idea of rural is not the same as others.

You can get into some great hunting and fishing if you head west/north in Ontario. Some good fishing and hunting. Good deer around Dryden. Moose is a lot easier to get a tag for if you get out of the Ottawa area and look at the areas in the northwest.

Still, Ontario has way too many Liberals for my taste and they control things as no one from Ottawa and the GTA gives a shit about rural hicks. In your case this is not going to be an issue as I gather it is just a short term position and back to the Excited States.

You might be able to use a couple years in Ottawa to your advantage for hunting and fishing in other parts of the country.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do. Smiler

Skyline, BWW can explain for himself but I think he's looking at a job transfer within his company that will take him to Ottawa. Though I think we can agree that he won't be a prisoner there and can head north for some good hunting and fishing opportunities.

I got a 54" moose near Geraldton in 2006 and have a bear hunt planned near Kirkland Lake this fall.

I share your dislike for Liberals but have never been able to understand why independent folk in the north turn it socialist orange every election. cuckoo
