Hi guys, just wondering who has good success moose hunts for "poor" guy prices?! I'm not a trophy hunter, but would like to shoot a bull, pretty much for meat and maybe a set of antlers for the wall. I've been looking at Newfoundland and found a few reasonably priced hunts. Just wondering if anyone here has good info/experience with any particular outfitters. Thanks!

Isn`t Alaska`s pricer so much higher that even the DIY are higher than some of the cheaper guided hunts in other parts of north america. I am from Norway, so don`t know any better. Would love some examples of prices guided and unguided to see the differenceSmiler?

What do you call poor guy prices? There are many outfitters in BC with decent rates and good success rates. Are you looking for a truck hunt or a horse back hunt or to just kill a moose for the cheapest rate? Newfoundland is probably the cheapest place to go with piles of moose if you just want a moose.

We were thinking Newfie because we could drive and easily get our meat stuff out without shipping and airlines... Somewhere in the 3-4 k range. Alaska would be cool someday maybe...

A client and good friend just returned last month from a moose hunt he bought at the local SCI Fundraiser. The retail price was $5,500 and was offered in Saskatchewan. He never saw a moose and found out later that the outfitter had not had a client kill a moose since '05. Beware of cheap hunts.

A quality hunt in B.C. on a remote lake will run $7,000-$10,000 but the success rate will be 90%. The pick up spot and stalk should be cheaper but you might be competing with the locals.

I appreciate the advice mark but 7-10k is unaffordable to most people, me included. Like I said I not a guy whose hung up on inches and bragging rites. Just an affordable trip with a shot at a moose! I'll continue applying in Maine, vt, and nh, but it would be nice to go without having to draw a near impossible tag! I realize for what seems to be a lot of people on this sight that 7-10 k seems to come easily, but when you make 50k a year and have a non working wife and two toddlers, those numbers aren't possible!!! I wish they were though! Thanks again...

Also, I had a client a few years back the went to Newfoundland I believe, every year with a group of 8-10 guys. I swear at the time he said it was around 3-3500 or so. They drove up, and cooked their own meals but had guides. They all killed moose every year. Some cows and small bulls, but that's kinds what I'm looking for. Just wondering if anyone had a name of an outfitter with that kind of experience...

I've hunted moose 3 times in Newfoundland and was successful on bull moose on two of the trips. The outfitter I hunted with on the first two trips sold the outfit 3 weeks before our third hunt...didn't find out until the day before we left Texas. We did see quite a few moose during our hunts but most of them were across the river or on the next hunting unit.
Not a good experience and won't go back...like Mark says, be careful choosing an outfitter.

Newfoundland is your best bet based on your expectations. They have more moose per sq-km than anywhere else on God's earth, so much so that even driving during daylight hours can be hazardous. Then, you can mix in a bear hunt if wanted.

The moose of Newfoundland are denizens... a pair imported from New Brunswick (my native province) in the early 1900's. Today, they number into thousands! And, they are not necessarily inferior to western moose!

Google: "Outfitters for moose hunts on Newfoundland". You'll come up with a lot of names. Check 'em out with references.

Again, thanks everyone for your input. I appreciate it! Mark, if down the road I could afford a higher quality hunt, and want a bigger bull I'll certainly take your advice. Just trying to do the best with what I've got!!!

You are wise to look at Newfoundland. A really affordable way to go is to wait until the actual camps are closed for the season, around the end of October. You can then easily secure a guide who has a leftover moose tag ( good for bull, cow, or calf) and secure your own lodging. We stayed 3x at Marble Mountain Ski resort which isn't open for skiing in late Nov. but has clean, large suites w/ full kitchens. The guide will pick you up at your door each morning & provide lunch, he'll then drive you 1 1/2 hrs to his concession of thousands of sq. kms. Last trip we had our bull, a spike, at 10 AM the first morning! Contact Dean MacDonald of Moose valley Outfitters. As close a "sure bet" as there is and he's a real gentleman. Another good outfitter in that area, near cornerbrook, is WHERE-YA- Wannabe outfitters, stay @ same ski place & hunt closer by. Downside is you will see local hunters, Where Dean hunts you go deep in on quads and will be alone with your guide and your thoughts.

Let me know if you decide to book with Dean (Moose Valley) or Barry (Where-Ya-Wannabe) Either way you will 99% get a moose. Be sure to get a bird license & borrow a shotgun- - 3 types of grouse, hare, & ptarmigan. You can call for coyotes too, they are huge up there.
