I'm fortunate enought to be participating in a moose hunt in Alberta this fall with my father-in-law. It will be the first time for both of us. We both are experienced shooters, but want to ensure that we are fully prepared to make an accurate shot when needed. I have been looking for a life sized paper/cardboard target with a moose picture or silhouette, preferably with vitals shown, that we can practice shooting on. I realize we don't have to have this to ensure we can make an accurate shot, but it's nice when the adrenalin is pumping to have the confidence that you've made that shot before. At least as close as it can be shooting at a piece of paper.

Don't worry about the shot. It is a big deer. Worry about getting the thing out of the woods. Use enough gun to drop it in it's tracks, you don't want to track this fellow.

What zone are you going to be hunting in? If you are in 204 (a parkland zone east of Stettler), give me a call. We've got one running back and forth through our fences right now and I won't have enough preference points to do anything about it for 5 or 6 years . Don't worry, you'll know where to shoot. Also a mooses vitals are at least 18" in diameter. In fact I'm the only person I know who's missed a moose at 15 yards!!! have fun on your hunt

When you practice, be sure to quickly take 3 aimed shots in a row. It is not uncommon for a moose to absorb a killing hit and still run off. It's also common, even for experienced hunters to stop and look after their first shot. Once hunting, take at least that second shot No Matter What!!! I speak from experience. What season are you hunting? If it's during the rut, and your guide is competent, you should be shooting your moose at 30-40 yards. A good guide should be able to bring a bull right to you. Not much need to practice at that range. Understanding shot placement and using adequately constructed bullets, that can penetrate through shoulder bone and muscle is what's important. If it's a late hunt, or maybe foothills area, where shots could be longer, well then that's different. But a moose is a damn big target. What cartridge are you guys shooting? What rifles?

Thanks for all of the advice. I've hunted a lot of deer so I'm pretty confident in my abilities. I'm just nervous because this will probably be my only opportunity to get a moose.

You will be fine. Moose are just big deer and not particularily tough. Put any reasonable bullet through the slats and you will next be taking photo's. Moose hunting is FUN! Where are you going to be hunting?
