Outfitter.......Ashnola Guide Outfitter
Location........Princeton, B.C. Canada
Firearm.........Winchester Model 70 300 Win Mag
(Grandpa’s gun)
Game hunted......Black Bear
Dates........... June 1-5 2014
Hunt Type........Dogs & Spot & Stalk

This hunt was purchased at SCI in Reno in January 2013 as a High School Graduation present for Spencer.

We drove 755 miles from Montana to Princeton B.C. We used the Osoyoos Border Crossing without hassle.

Mornings consisted of Driving logging roads with the strike dog on the dog box. When she got a good sniff of bear she barked. She was let off the box to determine how hot the trail was. If all we saw was ears and tail going over the bank we had a hot one and the other seven dogs bailed out of the box.

The first strike of the first morning resulted in Spencer’s first bear. It was a 45 minute chase and a ¾ mile hike through deadfall and thickets. Spencer made a clean shot on this 6’4” squared bear. The dogs were rewarded by being allowed to worry over the bear. After Darrell skinned the bear, Spencer packed out his hide and meat. This was acknowledged and appreciated. The first day we “Passed” on several bears and Spencer missed one. There is a high proportion of color phase bears in the area.

In the afternoon we drove logging roads and glassed green landings looking for bears. The second bear was shot after being stalked on the 4th day from 200 yards. This bear was 6’0” Squared.

We saw 21 bears of which 3 were black, the rest ranged from bleach blonde to chocolate colored. We also had the pleasure of watching a boar and a sow grizzly for nearly an hour.
Other wildlife included moose, elk, bighorn sheep, snow shoe rabbits and lots of deer.

Darrell Schnieder, Ashnola Guide Outfitter is a first rate outfitter with excellent accommodations and equipment.
