We bought a herd of buffalo up north of Saskatoon a bit. We were hoping to cull 13 of the cows and all 6 of the big rank bulls ... 4 of the cows are already spoken for .. and it doesn't much matter when they are collected for the ol' freezer. I suspect that it will be as soon as it cools a bit .. Right now they are on a 1/4 section .. and as anyone can imagine .. the old plains buffalo hunts were sort of .. like a friend in Montana likes to say .. the real meal deal .. You sneak up and shoot them .. Not a wary big white tail buck ... just a thousand pound (I suppose) animal composed of 400-500 pounds of steaks, roasts, hamburgers, etc .. For $500 you shoot them mgun.. we help you gut it and load it up .. There is a butcher shop within a 30 minute drive that can cut them up ... Or you can take them home and do it yourself .. My friends do theirs .. I go to a butcher shop .. It would be kind of cool to use a Sharps or some such old style gun on them .. We would like to eventually have buffalo on a much bigger tract of land .. set up a teepee .. use a Sharps ... some old style traditional food for the people ... (Next year, we hope ...)

First call with a $100 non refundable deposit will hold a cow buffalo ... For the 9 available ... $500 Canadian each .. you get the meat, the head, and the robe ...

The big bulls ... $1,250 each ... lots and lots of meat .. a huge robe ... and the big head for mounting .. either with fur(or is it called 'hair'?) or European ... $200 non refundable deposit. We hope to have the bulls shot on the long weekend at Thanksgiving time .. (It'll take me half a day to get there .. and if anyone in Southern Alberta is interested .. they can come with me ...

Bottom line: A chance to fill your freezer ... shoot your own meat ...Send me a PM if you are interested ... If you think that we should leave the bulls alone - you tell them that .. and then run like hell !!! Big Grin

Let me see if I can find some interested neighbours to share... I'm going for moose, and three antelope too this year.... I need a bigger freezer.

<free bump>

I wish I'd seen something like this when I lived in Canada -- that is a good deal for some truly excellent meat!

I'd have to do something with the hide too -- maybe a nice vest -- with the fur on of course!

ANY IDEA on how much the local butcher charges for the processing?
and
how long will it take?

I was told 30 cents a pound ....Not sure of the turn around... Probably depends on the circumstances .. Where I live in Southern Alberta the processors charge from 39-49 cents. 49 cents a pound can add up .. I shot a bull elk once and the one particular butcher came to yell at me .... He had a huge box of wrecked meat from one bullet in the hindquarter .. as the wounded bull was running away I had shot him again ... He wanted me to feel like a low life for shooting it there. Actually I felt no remorse as I was more interested in getting that elk than in having it escape .. His point made ... he still charged me 49 cents a pound for the (maybe) 100 pounds of discarded bloodshot ruined quarter .. Frowner hammering Big Grin

Sounds fun....unfortunately I have to wait until after hunting season. If I strike out-very unlikely of course!! Then I'd be very interested. If we did a late season thing I could cut the meat for us. You'd have to be willing to help out though. You know like wrapping meat, passing my beer etc.

No problemo ... I've got the first week of January off ... actually, the last week of December, too .. They'd be shaggy varmints, then ... I'll save you a juicy cow, just in case ... The cow I shot last February dressed out at 476 pounds ...boned it was less, of course .. but with an elk and a moose in the freezer .. along with a few unlucky deer ... I was a generous man mid winter .... Roll Eyes Big Grin

I'm kinda in the same boat.. if all game escapes me.... but don't save me any critters. We'll take things as they develop.
