Has anyone else noticed around this time of year that they get grumpy. Damned I'm looking foreward to summer and the sun on my face. My poor kids are walking on pins and needles Eeker

I can't wait to get out and do some hunting. I'd even stoop to shooting gophers for a change.

Yes, I just figured I need to get out this weekend and find some winter range, and some sheep to look at. All this biathlon and XC skiiing at the Nordic Centre is nice, but really just a way of keeping the stamina at base level. It's no substitute for some real mountain time.

Let's talk about the fall, chef. What are your plans? Maybe that'll take your mind off things a bit.

I'm not sure if it's the year of the sheep, the year of the mega muley-got lotsa points I think, or the year of the elk-found a great spot.

I'm really thinking about spring bear right now. I think I can get away for a few days. archer

OH YEAH...I'm feelin' it.

Work is EXTRAORDINARILY stressful right now (lumber) and coming home after a LOOONG day of battling to stay afloat, only to have another big snow shoveling job to face....yep, close to snapping! Smiler (trying to maintain a happy face)

It's version of SAD, that's what, just the hunter's type. The only cure (temporary though it is) is to go coyote calling,, and see if you can bring a few of them under your sights. - dan

The lack of daylight makes me severly grumpy, something only Mexico really cures. Usually I am there this week, but this year due to kids issues it's not until the last week of March.

Me too. Like Martin said vitamin D helps I find, just finished a contract (helicopter maintenance) in Terrace last month and didnt see even a trace of sunshine for the first 15 days. Pretty damn depressing.

Every year is the year of the sheep, chef! The rest is icing. I think I could be persuaded to spend some time on elk this year though. I have lots of holiday left over from last year, so if I just manage to disappear into the boonies without a cell phone this fall, I might even get to use it.

I'm just thinking long and hard on how to approach sheep hunting this year: day hunts, and short backpack trips in K-country... or something more adventurous... hire a packer maybe?

I'm mulling something over and I might make a really big push to get a sheep this year. I wondder what a packer would charge for a week or two in the back country?

By the way, there are two sorts of packers... the drop-off-pick-up type, and the type that run your camp for you so all you do is hunt. A friend of mine asked around for something like that in BC and it wasn't as expensive as I expected. Not sure if the latter type is active around here too. Do know about the former.

I take 2000 IUs per day...it ain't helping. All I need is the dollar back to about $0.85 USD and Lumber back up to $350/mfbm. Then I'll feel alot better...sun or no sun!

Cheers,
Canuck

Grumpy, cabin fever. We are at the SK. farm this morning. It's -35 without the wind. -54 with wind chill. Opened the door to chase the house dog out and she near bit me. Mark

That time of the year. Big Grin -31 here and a good day to go out and harass some wolves, always a cure for cabin fever. Frans and Chef, you KNOW there is an auction in Red Deer next Sat.? Another good cure.

I was diagnosed with SAD 2 years ago, nothing beats bundling up and chasing some furry woodland creatures about to get rid of the winter blues! That, a good night's sleep (especially rare with a 2-month-old son!), and a good diet works wonders. My doc decided to treat it with a mild sedative and off-the-shelf multivitamins instead of some fancy-schmancy anti-depressants and let me tell you, I much prefer his approach!

Any biathlon rifles on the roster? A lightweight sheep rifle maybe?

Git'cher snowshoes on and quit yer complainin'! I have found bliss in the winter woods by just getting outside on the shoes.

There has been over 9 feet of snow already at my location. Depressing? Yes, since spring is a long way away yet but the woods sure are pretty all covered in a white blanket.

I'm getting some scouting in as well seeing where the game is moving which is not much with the snow depth.

Here's a dogs gone wild photo:

This'll do it too. Big Grin Topless ladies are pretty hard to find in Canada, this time of the year and NO americans in Cuba.

Nine feet? Here on the East side of the Rockies, on the high plains we don't see those volumes of snow. Much more when you go West though, into the mountains.

A friend of mine sent me a pair of those "tennis racket" type of snowshoes. They look awfully wide and long and cumbersome. Haven't tried'm yet.

I engage in biathlon-training once a week, and at least one other skiing session each week. There's not a lot of wildlife and feeling for the wild involved in that, but boy, I feel I'm getting stronger, and shooting straighter and faster too.

I'm planning on trying to make a push for some sheep winter range on the edge of Banff NP, see if I can get some photos.

There's always something to do, even if it is winter.
