Hi,

I´m planning a hunt for black bear next fall and I´m very close to booking with pioneeroutfitters. Anyone hunted with them? Comments?

I have hunted with Pioneer Outfitters and David Doan out of Riding Mountain Manitoba for both a spring and fall bear hunt. !00% suceess with my whole party on both hunts--all good bears.

The fall hunt i liked better because there was only two of us in camp and we had alot more one on one attention.

The area has the potential for some huge bears because of the agricultural small grain crops surrounding the Riding Mountain Park. You just have to sort through the bears and be patient. Also make sure you go early enought in the fall season before the acorns start falling since that will slow down the number of bears that you see.

Accomodations and food are very good but you will be in a rural farm area rather than " in the bush" such as you would have in a fly in tent camp.

Its an easy hunt from a physical perspective--but you will have to "put your time in the stand".

I have been on other bear hunts in a similar price range and Pioneer outfitters would be my pick--always a good chance for a record book bear. David will do his best to accomodate you--he grew up in the area and knows every inch of it.

If you use a bow practice alot and use good equipment as these big bears take alot of killing. Same for your gun do not go too light and use a good bullet that will break bone and penetrate.

I would be glad to answer any of your questions. You can email me at: bowen475@aol.com

bowen475: Thanks for the feedback. I´ve done a preliminary booking for early in the season, still have some references to check out. I´ve never shot a bear even though I´ve hunted bear a couple of times so I might have a hard time picking a "good one". Then again I´m not looking for a record bear, a "good" one would be fine.

I live in a rural area in Finland so I guess the hunting will remind me of the bearhuting we do here. Sitting in a stand is one of my stronger points, use that a lot for whitetail!

I´ll be shooting a 8x60S with a 220 grain bullet (maybe 250?) so it should have the power for a black bear. First I sort of thought about taking my .416 Rigby but that might be overkill?

cewe,

I've known Dave Doan for about ten years....he's honest, knows the bush, and has a great area....I don't know of anyone that will work harder for you than Dave.
