This rack is from a moose killed by an american hunter in New France, Nova Scotia in the 1920s. It is being recaped by the owner's friend as a gift.

It has double pans that are aproximately at 60 degrees from each other on each side. Lots of points.

Cape Breton Moose 2005. Cape Breton Moose is a cross between the Nova Scotia mainland moose and Alberta moose. Cape Breton is an Island.
Lottery moose only for residents. Only 300 or so harvested per yr.

These antlers were harvested in the 1920s in New France Nova Scotia, Canada. It is from a native Nova Scotia moose. I will re-cape it for the owner.

That's interesting, I had never heard that western moose had been transplanted to NS, but the fact that there's a Nova Scotian moose in the top 5 B&C would account for it. The picture I saw of that rack looked more like a western moose than an eastern one.

I guess that people with good intentions have caused intergrade situations all over the place. For example, there were once some mule deer released in the Ottawa valley.

Have you had either of the pictured moose scored?

Exit 31,

Thanks for posting these photos. I really enjoyed them. My ancestors settled in New France back in 1620 and were, of course, French!

The Catholic church did a great job of keeping records and the family chronology is complete from 1585 onwards. I still have lot's of family in the Maritimes as well as in Maine.

Even though I like Montana, it is getting kind of crowded these days though, I would return to the east in a second if I could.

New France was the original name of Nova Scotia as the french settled it. Later the french essentially abandoned their colonists and the english moved in and displaced most of the french. It was renamed by the the english. Isle St. Jean became Prince Edward Island, etc. Cape Breton is a french remnant I believe. That is where my ancestors settled when they first came over as french ship builders.

Comier is my mom's maiden name. It's her side of the family that are french canadian. She was born in the U.S though(Van Buren, ME). Her parents and all the kids spoke french as their first language and english as a second language.

There are probably tens of thousands of Cormier's throughout Eastern Canada and Maine. In Memramcook, N.B there is a area of town called Cormier's Cove. Lot's of them are my relatives.

Exit31,

Are you a resident of Cape Breton Is? Fort Saint-Pierre was the original french fort there. That is where my family started out in Canada. It's now called St. Peters, I believe.

Is your ancestry french or english?

ST Peters it is called now. I am from the mainland of Nova Scotia. Yep I'm acadian. Moose are only hunted in Cape Breton today. Draw for locals. Only 200 to 300 tags per yr. Mainland moose is protected. Cape Breton moose is a cross breed with Alberta and Nova Scotia moose. Had beer at the St. Peter's tavern 30 yrs ago.

My ancestors are originally from the Annapolis Valley...Port Royal area. I now live in South Western NS. Yarmouth area (Clare). Community is still french speaking. This is good bear country and our deer are transplants from Maine subspecies introduced in the 1920s. Whitetails are the reason the mainland moose is almost extinct here. Moose just can't cope with deer paracites. There are perhaps only 200-300 mainland (original blood line moose left in all of Nova Scotia and I don't think their is enough strenth in that small number for them to come back. Not good.

Exit31:

You never know what can be accomplished in species recovery if you can get buy-in from both the government and the local population. It sounds that the latter is a major problem in NS.

A hundred years ago, there were fewer than 1,000 moose in Sweden, but aggressive management and partnerships with the hunting community caused a phenomenal comeback. In some years the annual harvest in Sweden exceeds our total moose population in Ontario.

Since you didn't answer my question about the score of those racks, I'm assuming they haven't been measured - too bad.

Sorry for the oversight with reply regards scoreing. The antlers, I am told, although recorded in the Nova Scotia Big Game Record Books have never been scored as far as I know. They are recorded as an oddity. I had an antler collector come in to see them last week and he was also a scorer here in NS. He said that because of the way they were shaped they were impossilble to score. He added that also because of their shape they were very valuable as a unique one of a kind trophy. He said very "valuable", perhaps more so that many scoreable racks.

So there you go they are not scored because they can't be.!!! At least this is what I am told. The double pans are perhaps 60 degrees to each other, on each side! with points coming from lots of unexpected places.

Would you have some reference, written or video, to history of Swedish Moose story? You got my attention!
