Can Kutenay, or anyone else tell me the ball park value of a brno 21-h 8mm 24" barrel rifle in excellent condition , in Canada. I know they are worth more in the states, everything is.

"These figures strike me as being at the high end of the spectrum" My offer stands. "to me a Brno 21-Hh in 8-57 is a "donor" rifle for the fabulous action" Bad idea. What's not to like?

If, I find/found a 21-H, cal. 8-57js in truely minty condition for a low price, I might buy it and keep it with the other classic rifles I have just because I like them. However, the 8mm is not a round that I would choose for B.C. and the action will handle, in an unmodifed form, a .338-06, Whelen or 9.3x62; these are far superior rounds for my particular uses and thus I would use the action from a less than pristine specimen for this purpose. Since there are very few serious gun collectors left in Canada and none that I know who collect Brnos, what would be the point of keeping a rifle intact but unused when I could build something useful on it? It is now quite troublesome to sell rifles into the USA, so, I won't do so, except in very rare cases and thus my options are limited. For example, today I bought a Husqvarna Mod. 1950 in extremely nice shape for about $300.00 USD, it is a .270. I like .270s and have a pair of P-64 FWTs in that chambering, but, this rifle is too heavy for that caliber, so, I will have it rebarreled to .338-06, .35Whelen or 9.3x62, maybe just re-bored in fact, depending on what the chamber and neck on the present barrel is like. This is something I can use where my considerable number of smaller calibers are used only in late season after Yogi has gone by by. I hunt and shoot and although I would not tamper with a truely minty classic, old 70, 71 or Mannlicher-Schoenauer, Oberndorf sporter, Brno or whatever, anything not pristine is fair game. YMMV.

"8mm is not a round that I would choose for B.C. and the action will handle, in an unmodifed form, a .338-06, Whelen or 9.3x62" Not that much difference, particularly if one handloads. "I hope ALF will save the Brno's for beeing slaughterd" Absolutely. Pass them on to someone who fully appreciates them.

Well, as much as I respect both of you gentlemen and invariably enjoy your posts, I must disagree with your accessment of the 8-57js, especially viv-a-vis the 9.3-62. I base my opinions on being in at the death of quite a number of Bears, including Grizzlies, not upon the statistics given in reloading data. The 8-57js does not equal the .30-06, when loaded to equal pressures, using available bullets of identical construction and ballistic coefficient, in barrels of equal length. This is not preference or bias, this is quantifiable ballistic fact. The wonderful 9.3x62 was specifically developed by Otto Bock for use by German pioneers in darkest Africa as the 8-57 round was found wanting on heavy game; the .33 cal. rounds came about in both Britain and the USA for a similar purpose as did the great and under-appreciated .35 Whelen. If and when, you ever have a close range personal encounter with a Grizzly, you will very likely see the truth in this as you obviously do not now, Grizzlies at close range make a very definite impression on one! As to passing rifles on, etc., I think that a fine, custom rifle is more useful and a greater "treasure" for it's recipient than a tired, old "beater". In any event, I shall gladly trade you any Brno 8-57js rifles I find for specimens in both 7x57 and 9.3x62 and even 7x64; this in the interests of keeping said Brnos intact. So, lets get with this progamme which should keep us all happy! P.S. Forrest, if I decide to part with that ZG-47 barrel I have, you have first right of refusal and I would p.m. you; this "might" happen after Xmas, as I am trying to finetune my guns and equipment collection so that there is room in the house for my wife and I.

"if I decide to part with that ZG-47 barrel I have, you have first right of refusal" Thanks. I love custom rifles too, even have two ZG-47s I customized (blasphemy!), and I've got another ZG action located here in the states I could use that barrel for. If not, it becomes a 9.3 or a 404, Brno contour with Brno sights, of course!

Thankyou all for the advice and input, Kutenay I live in Calgary so can't take you up on your offer. I have an offer from a friend for $800, I am considering it. Kutenay, I havent seen your tracks at CGN for a long time, lots of people seem to have left. I used quasi as a user name up until the last crash, I now use buckbrush.

I certainly remember you and am very pleased that you are here; if my memory is correct, we had very similar tastes in rifles. So, you also left CGN as did many of us, due to the vicious slagging, by a self-appointed group of experts, of anyone who dared to disagree with their version of reality. I do visit now and even post, but, I avoid any of the usual windbags who can't discuss anything without becoming unpleasant.....I am sure you know whom I refer to. The overall quality of posts has gone down, I think, too bad that many of the best people left; I will say, though, that the current group of moderators are more even handed than was the case before the big crash. Hope you stick around, buddy, I would consider that offer very fair for that rifle, but, post the details as there are some unusual features that can make them worth more. In the USA, these command a higher price than they do here, but, I hesitate to sell guns into the USA as they have enough nice ones there already.....boy, now I'm in for it!

Kutenay, I agree with your point about selling to the U.S., In my opinion, it is selling our heritage. Most of the large winchester and sharps collectors moved their stuff to the US 7 years ago or so. This has also happened to a much greater degree in england, sweden, ... I still post at CGN some what, it is a good place to buy some of the stuffwe are interested in, selling depends on what type of firearms they are, I have had good sucsess selling handguns and scopes and miscelanious stuff, its not a very good place to sell a pre-64 70 or a 21-h. It seems to be a Rem. 700, sniper rifle bunch of guys with very few exceptions. I can email you pictures of the 21-h if you like, I really don,t know that much about them, even though I have had several 465 hornets and have one now made in 49, and I have a 602 action waiting for a barrel in .416,or 505,or...
