I'm seiously considering a hunt this fall for Woodland Caribou and Eatern Canada Moose in Newfoundland. I've contacted about 15 outfitters and am looking over all the info they have sent. Most of it is pretty similar to each other in hunts, prices etc... Anybody on this forum have any personal experience with anybody up there for these species. I'd appreciate and info or names that you can provide. Thanks Mac

MAC I hunted with Joe Peddle... Which ever hunt you decide to go on...go on a fly in hunt.Don't do the drive in hunt. Newfoundland is a great hunt, and the people are some of the best in thw world. You will have a great time. Hunt as long as you can As hard as you can. You may not get tommorrow.

While I can't give you outfitter knowledge all that well, as I'm "just" a local transplant from the US, I did post some general info in some threads that are now on page 2. See jgnfld posts in Pine Ridge Lodge for Newfoundland Caribou Oh, did I mention the weather... and Eastern Canada Moose. If there is anything else at all I can do to help, don't hesitate to ask. I'm in St. John's. Navy, huh...were you ever to Argentia? Ever hear any russki subs on the wire?

Possibly. I highly suspect other factors at work as well. Barring a few exceptions, rural Newfoundland has only begun to attune itself to the idea of selling services like hunting to people from away. Among other problems, I suspect a real perception gap in many cases. Many completely good-hearted people have no idea what the expectations of a hunter who consistently travels around the continent/world are. Many are only now shaking out and finding what the business actually requires by making some mistakes on hunters now. Others may be unscrupulous, but that really isn't the culture of this place...the culture here is to extend more than you'd ever expect. Anyway, that said, of course you want to protect yourself. I can't really help you on that score. Find some real reference sources--I do know they exist on Internet, but I don't have a link at the moment. Newfoundland is beautiful. These are obviously barren ground caribou. This herd is about 60-odd miles south of St. John's near Cape Race, but around the corner facing Cape St. Mary's to the west. I hunt in the mountains on the far side of the bay north of a town called Branch that may or may not be on any map you have.
