Just received this from my club in Toronto TITS

Changes to the Canadian Firearms Program
On April 5, 2012, Bill C-19, Ending the Long-Gun Registry Act, came into effect. The key changes are as follows:
Removal of the requirement to register non-restricted firearms
Destruction of the existing non-restricted firearms registration records
Allowing the transferor of a non-restricted firearm to obtain confirmation of a transferee’s firearms acquisition licence prior to the transfer being finalized
Until further notice, due to a Court Order issued by the Quebec Superior Court, residents of Quebec are still required to register non-restricted firearms with the RCMP Canadian Firearms Program.
It is important to note that the new law does not change the requirement for all individuals to hold a licence in order to possess a firearm. The licensing, safety training and safe storage requirements for anyone who uses or owns a firearm continue to be in force.
The legislation also does not impact registration requirements for restricted or prohibited firearms.

Why does Quebec always have to be so difficult?? Good news for the rest of the country though and an example of what can be done when gun owners get together.

Great news!

That should add to the information available to authorities in australia & NZ to avoid this stupid proposal and avoid the millions in wastage of tax payer's money.

IIRC, NZ had a gun registry starting in 1986 and turfed it circa 2002, because it was a useless waste of money.

Don't tell me they're taking another kick at the can?????

That is good news...and a first step in the right direction.

Now we need to get rid of the gun control act of 1979 which established the requirement for an FAC for long guns.

Canada had no violence problem with long guns. That was and is a poiltical correctness exercise which cost, and still costs, bundles of taxpayer money and in my view accomplishes exactly nothing except harassing the law-abiding. For the yonger folks reading this, until then long guns could be bought and sold through the mail by individuals without any federal restrictions, so long as the weapon itself was of legal length...they could also be imported by individuals in Canada from any other country in the world via the mail or common carriers without an import permit.

I know that is true, as I used to import dozens for my own collection every year.

You can still do all that so long as you have a PAL. Buying guns through the mail is pretty simple, well other than from the U.S. but that has nothing to do with Canadian law.

I don't know what a PAL is, but it must deal only with imports.

And if it is a new kind of permit, why does the government think it is a help in avoiding violent crime? No federal permit of any kind was needed to import rifles or shotguns until the FAC came into force on January 1,1979, and there surely were never any signficant crimes committed with sporters imported from other countries.

And, of course, now you can't even legally possess a gun without an FAC even if you inherit it from your grandpa. Political control of the masses BS by the self-ordained aristocracy, all of it.

There is no such thing as an FAC any more. Hasn't been for a long time. It was replaced by the PAL many years ago. PAL allows you to buy and own firearms. You need a PAL or POL to own guns now.

What ever one may call it, in my opinion it is just "politically correct" B.S. which does nothing to protect society and wastes taxpayer money to ensure employment for a group of bureaucratic paper-shufflers and needlessly harrass citizens.

It is the next thing which logically needs to go.
