Oh shoot, really Easter weekend? I just made arrangements to go visit friends in Montana. I intended to look for maybe a nice lightweight .243 for my kids, or a Guide Gun in the venerable (HA!) .45-70, or maybe a .270, to bridge the gap between my .22 WMR and .300 WM, maybe a good scope for my .416, a replacement front sight for the Lee Enfield, etc, etc, etc.

Shame to miss it.

When I was last in montana I inquired about buying a gun.......actually a nice 45/70 stainless model. The guy at the gun shop said don't bother it's too hard for the average guy to do the paperwork to import a gun to canada. Do you know how to do this? I'd appreciate the info if you do or have done it.

Oh please, don't start. The easiest way is to get two firearm dealers involved, one in the US willing to export, and one in Canada willing to import. Can you see the $$ adding up?

I've started looking into ways of doing it myself, but got fed-up with all the different rules. Life's too short. Just pay the extra bucks at a CDN dealer.

ya, Frans I think you're right on that one. It just seems insurmountable. You know what the manager at the store told me? He says they were getting a pallet of guns every month out of Canada to sell cause all us Canucks are selling our guns. Thank you very much Liberal government.

Just repeating what I read on CGN but legally importing a gun into Canada from the US isn't all that hard or expensive if you go with:

Gentlemen, can a US resident legally buy a gun at a Canada gun show without a bunch of paperwork?

Well, if has a Canadian Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL) he can. Then he'll need a BATF form 6, I believe to take them across the border into the US. And getting the transfer from one owner to the other can take a while, so it's not like you would be picking it up on the day you buy it. So; tough to do certainly, impossible? No. - Dan

Dan

A BATF form 6 is just for temporary import of a firearm by a non-resident alien. It also requires re-export of that firearm to its origin (can't stay in the US or be taken on to another country).

I am not sure what form a US resident would require to import a firearm from Canada. My guess would be that the State Department would actually cover that one (as they do for temporary import and then export to another country).

Cheers,
Canuck

The answer to the question is still an emphatic NO. Not only is their required paperwork and wait time, you also have to go to school. For a few hours. Wink

Wish I could attend that show (Calgary) and buy something nice. I used to buy stuff in Canada when all it took was a BATF Form 6 to import. I think that's still all it takes from the US standpoint but the new Canadian rules are the hangup now. Guess I'll have to be content with Tulsa next weekend (3800 tables).
