Swiss, do your homework- if it is mainly private, start trying to get permission now -preferrably on lands know to have elk at that time of year- else, you will have an empty freezer.
Hello; That time of the year, the ranchers will be haing problems with elk in their haystacks, especially if the weather is shitty. You might be able to find someone who is happy to hear from you or check with Fish and Feathers who could use some help. Otherwise they'l just phone our Native Bretheren. Grizz

It depends on what side you've drawn for. The B side is all private land, my family owns a Ranch right in the middle of it. However permission isn't the issue. The cows do not leave the Park this time of year even for the haystacks. The cows leave to calve around mid March and that's when they start eating our grass. You can get lucky but don't count on it. I've hunted and guided in this Zone my entire life and a cow Elk tags that time of year are really a waste of $40.00.
The A side might bring better luck, but not a bunch.

Hello Chuck; Wouldn't be my first choice either, but he did get drawn and you know what they say about a bad days huntin. Besides, he wouldn't have to spend the 40 bucks till he knew were the Elk were. Gotta remember that these extra late seasons are limited entry and were specifically designed to put pressure on elk herds that are an agricultural problemm, so you can't treat it like a general season hunt. Maybe your Elk operate on a different schedule, but we get them on hay stacks well into WMU214, from around Christmas until they are either driven off or the grass begins to green up. They are creatures of habit and the trick is to find who they are bothering. my neighbor had to have Indians come the last two years. The local CO would know exactly where to go and would probably send a guy there. Grizz

If I can find a cow moose in area 244, then anything is possible. Most people I had asked at the time would laugh and say they haven't seen one in twenty years or more.
The thing about Grizz is, wether you're getting the politically correct opinion, or an honest one. Just like wolves, there is quite a difference. Surprising where Moose, like Elk can turn up. I live at the edge of the Prairie in agricultural land and we even got some good bulls here. It probably won't be too long before we have a Feb. Elk hunt around here, the way things are going. As it is, they've extended it till Dec.20 Grizz

Chuck is absolutely correct about the 'B' side. I have hunted there lots in the last five or six years. Sometimes the cow herd might come out on Jim Garner's place which is hard up on the boundary .. he has subdivided his little ranch and I'm not sure if hunting there is a viable option anymore. We've killed four bulls on the 'B' side in that span of time. (My family) ..two five pointers and two big six pointers. Never seen a single cow in all those hunts ....(Hi, Chuck! How you doing, amigo ? My wife Margaret has been drawn for the late season bull tag ..my son the F 300 moose draw .. me - I got me a white tail doe tag)

I knew that had to be you! I've been drawn for absolutely nothing, but am going after Elk, Sheep, and Bear tomorrow. It'll br more of a scouting trip for a place to set the tent up in October, but will be packing a rifle and tags. Hey, I found one of those lefty stainless Winchester's. Good luck on the upcomming season, and I hope Margaret kills a whopper.
