Had that have happened in America, the officer would have to move to another country.

Are police in Canada allowed to carry firearms???

Even the rocks don't last forever.

there is a vehicle driving by like every three seconds.
had he shot the thing there would have been 9 law suits and they would have ended up paying for counseling too.

Ya I thought same but there were a lot of other options but quite likely he had never killed an animal in his life and panicked a bit. Time for some protocol to be established for sure! Lots of people calling for his head but I think education would be a good first step! I think the 30-minute death scene and screaming deer was likely cause for more counseling required than a quickly slit throat!

I have killed more car hit deer, bear and other critters then I can remember.

I never ever thought about running them over to do so.

In the academy part of our firearms training was how to properly euthanize animals using our firearms.

I stopped using my handgun long ago and use my shotgun most often. It can be embarrassing to miss.

The last department I work for one had to write elaborate use of force reports when one discharged his firearm.

I cut a lot of deer throats after that when safe to do so.

True story I was helping investigate a fatal car semi crash. On a major US highway.

Of course traffic volume picked up and there was a lot of people working the scene LEO fire EMS.

As my part of the investigation I had to cross back and forth over the highway.

I am standing waiting for the guys doing traffic direction to give me a chance to cross.

As I was standing there a big doe ran pass me and was struck right in the middle of this accident scene.

It was laying there in the middle of the road flopping around with a broken back.

With vehicles lined up in both directions and people standing around.

I decided discharging firearm was not the best way of killing then removing the deer.

My normal work knife was a Cold steel voyager 4 inch. I like my knifes very sharp.

The deer was laying right in front of a car with a women driver.

I motioned her to stay right where she was an walked out to the deer.

I grabbed the deer by the ear open my knife in a very practice one hand motion.

Then sliced the deer throat all in about 15 seconds. As one would expect blood gushed out.

The deer went limp and the eyes glazed over shortly.

I then wiped my knife on the deer hide put it back in my pocket.

I then made eye contact with the female driver.

She had a very surprise look on her face.

I then dragged the deer off the roadway and traffic started moving again.

The next day a was told to call my supervisor. I all ready had a good idea what about.

His first question was did you cut a deer throat yesterday.

I said yes it was to dangerous to shoot it with all those cars and people around.

He said well ok don't do it again.

But in the back of my mind I thought if I would have dragged it off and then shot it while it was still alive it most likely have struggled a lot more.

Then I would have to fill out a us force report. When I was already up to my eye balls with paper work from the investigation.

I never tried to cut a bears throats very prudent I thought.

The look on the woman's face was almost priceless.

Could be very true when I was our senor firearms instructor.

I ran into a lot of new hires that had never handled or shot a fire arm before.

They came to us for instructed by us.

As far as actual killing anything heaven forbid.

One of those damned if you do, damned if you don't stories. Another report, a day before, whined about a truck load of pigs being left to suffer after a vehicle accident.

Grizz

Probably not what it seems. A year ago, I drove past a cop sitting in his car with a badly injured deer lying in the road. I stopped and asked the cop why he did not shoot the deer to put it out of its misery. He replied that he needed permission to discharge his weapon in a situation where there was no threat. He had to wait for the duty officer to give the ok. Duty officer was mia. So poor deer suffered. I believe police policy has changed, at least I hope so. He would have been smart to just run over deer like the video.
